Am I correct in surmising that the "mini pci" wifi cards that are used in Mikrotik Routerboards are the same sort of cards as found in (some) laptops with built in Wifi?

Reason for this question: I've just ordered a new (second hand actually) wifi card for my laptop as I use Linux and the original one does not work under Linux (well it does actually but not easily) ..

So now I'm gonna have this mini wifi card left, I'm wondering if it would be usable in a Mikrotik Routerboard? - I realise that RouterOS is basically some sort of Linux anyway.. so perhaps not?

The card in question is a "Broadcom" device (BCM9431)..

Thanks! :)

Your assumptions are correct! Certain cards do not work with Mikrotik (Intel being one of them afaik) but you may find that your Broadcom will be ok.

I am always ripping mini-pci cards out of laptops, adsl wifi-routers, wifi access points, etc etc... very valuable little devices to a Wugger! :D

Sweet! Thanks! :)

I do have a card in my own Routerboard so I don't need it there..
But I was thinking it may be of use to the PEWUG hardware needs.. :)

Ryder, whats the cheapest routerboard around, also have wireless cards lying around and wanna try the WUG think here in CT?

I would recommend a 133c for about R100 more you could get the 433 the difference is mem and processor speed but I havent had any issues with the few 133c's I have floating around

Mikrotik does not support the Broadcom (wireless) chipset. It is mainly the Atheros based products that work properly (and some legacy Prism stuff). Broadcom LAN products work though.

Thanks for the correction there savagedavid... I always tend to get my mini-pci's confused... I have about 6 assorted flavours on the desk here next to me! :D

To be fair - most wireless suppliers are pretty similar on price, just depends on which brand you prefer.

A mini-pci atheros a/b/g dual mode card should set you back between R280 and R350 ex vat for a 65mW card. It would not be fair of me to list any particular supplier online but pvt me and I will give you a list of companies to try.
