Hi, was not sure where to post this, but here seems the most appropriate.
I have a s710 phone on Cell-C contract. I was wondering if is possible to use this phone with a vodacom sim card to receive a 3G signal and connect to my laptop using USB. What steps do I have to take to make this work?

thanks just checked the specs;\
anyway, let say I have a 3G enabled phone, could I purchase a sim and add prepaid data bundle and hook to latop using USB or even bluetooth??? Any place where I could read more about this method. BTW: I just bought a 3G modem from vodacom and prepaid data bundle; works fine, but obviously I can't use the modem to dial (as cellphone)...would be good to have a phone-come-modem-come-phone combo
Hope that makes sense??

Makes sense. You will need the appropriate (USB) cable or infrared connection, cable drivers and modem drivers for your phone. Get a fresh sim and ask your local Vodashop to enable it for data and send the settings to your phone. Load a prepaid data bundle on the phone, add the phone as a modem in Windows, get the modem initialization string and dial up number and off you go. Edge is a bit slow but I'm using an elderly Nokia 5410 that does GRPS/EDGE and it works fine. You'll have to ask the clever guys how to do it in Ubuntu

Your phone should be unlocked so you can put any sim in it. You should be able to use your phone as a modem using the supplied USB cable. Generally you would have to install some software that came with the phone first and then you can create a dial-up profile in windows using the phone as the modem. Usually the number to dial is *99# and you can leave the username/password blank. A search of the forum should dish up more detailed steps.

Personally however I would just use the phone to make phone calls and the USB modem to surf. All that SIM swapping gets tiring after a while :)

The S710 uses Internet Sharing, so all you need is an Active SIM, the USB drivers installed(Or have it paired via Bluetooth), and you're set to go.
