mmm.. just looking through their website and found something intresting that leads me to believe that Sentech will probably offer the first VoIP service in SA we can only hope I mean it's almost impossible to get international clients becuase it costs to much to keep in contact with them but I found this little bit:
International telecommunication traffic to and from South Africa (CoC)
International inbound and outbound telephone services
Hubbing and transit services for international telephone traffic
International Private Leased Circuits (IPLC)
International VSAT solutions
International Internet access
International DTH services
Consulting
Partnerships and niche operations
Sounds promising I hope they do bring in VoIP :) but hey thats just me. :) Well use it don't use it.

I remember vaguely reading somewhere that VOIP services are regarded as a 'last mile' offering for Telkom provision over fixed lines only. Would be interesting to see if Sentech ultimately offer this over BB/Wireless for local 'last mile' delivery - methinks a healthy spat will develop between the two, hopefully ultimately benefiting the consumer...[:D][:p]

[V] well i can rest assured now that i know that sentech is a internet operator cause i just had my first experience with the mandatory i dont know and now thats not right tele operator.
just phoned em up and asked what the prices were with an without modem costs included. she couldnt give that to me.
so i asked how much is the modem gonna cost and she said 4k which is fine now when i pointed out to her that the monthly cost is made up of the subscription cost an also the paying off the modem she got that idea so i asked her again what the monthly cost is if i go to the front desk of sentech an sign up there and pay my 4k for the modem an all. that would leave me with just subscription costs to worry bout desu?
no reply woman just says that the cost is still 649 baaaaaaaaah.
anyone out there that can give some info on this
New service by Telkom broadband speeds up to 5kbps for only R1k a month. heheh

How this links in with this link I dunno but I'll answer anyway as far as the launch is concerned YOU CAN'T get the modem seperately you have to do the 24month contract(unless something has changed that I don't know of) so the lady at the desk can't answer you in that regard. You sign at Sentech office and you take the modem and the cost for 24 months that is the only option currently availible.

With regard to the VOIP side - Sentech have a Carrier's Carrier license which allows them to carry international voice traffic into and out of South Africa. They are using VOIP for this traffic, however they are not allowed to offer regular / traditional telephony services (VOIP or otherwise) to the local market. e.g. can't sell you or I a telephone handset / service.
... unfortunatly - but on that note, I'm absolutely sure they'd like to so as things move along with deregulation, this could well change and then they'd add this to their service offering. ... bring on the TNO !
