Can I use Skype on Vodacom?

Hi

Can somebody please confirm if it is possible to use Skype on the vodacom network without being charged extra for data?
My sister is moving to Aus and I only have a Vodacom connection available to me.
 
AFAIK you only pay for the data being sent and received on Skype. I've been using it on my 3G when I'm travelling
 
Technically the networks claim the right to charge you R25/MB for any Voice Over Internet calls, but in practice I don't believe anyone has actually been charged this. It's only a contingency measure, and it seems they're willing to turn a blind eye. For now. Skype certainly works for me on both main networks, with a typical half-hour to the USA (without video) costing around 20 MB of data.
 
I tested Shype on Vodacom HSDPA and it works great. If you have 3.6 HSDPA (with HSUPA) the quality is great! I think you can also feel safe that VC will not charge extra for VoIP in the near future - the backlash from subscribers will be enough to make them rethink even a statement to that effect :D
 
i have used it beofre any it uses a ****load of megs so u need to monitor very carefully and not talk for too long

Shype? Is that the shyte Skype? ;)

Out of interest where do you call to with Skype? Local or international?
 
In my experience Skype will even work well down to EDGE speeds (though ideally then you might want to turn off the video), but plain-vanilla GPRS is hopeless. Only mentioning this because it seems to be a common misconception that you need high-speed broadband for it to work well.

Doesn't seem much point to use it locally, to answer the previous question, as the data cost wouldn't be far short of paying for a normal voice call?

It depends, if you use fring it uses 8MB/hour which even at OOB rates = R16, definitely cheaper than a normal call. On a 2GB bundle it'd be a little over R3 an hour.
 
Well thats pretty good hey. Any sugestions for a webcam then?
 
I've used Skype on a dial-up modem before, connected at about 40k, and it was useable, but not great. Obviously there was no video.
