I just finished Feros and the assignments unlocked thereafter, heading off to Noveria next.
Dunno if I just play slowly, but I've clocked up 40 hours already

I've already finished the game twice. On the second playthrough I tried to do all of the sidequests. I only know of one that I missed.
The main quest is interesting, but short. The sidequests get boring after a while.

I would wait before you try to get it second-hand. AFAIK, there are still issues with the game activation. You might just get a copy that has no activations left.

I completed alll the side quests as well. If they bring out Mass Effect 2 I would definitely buy it ... cannot wait to kick some Reaper a$$.

Just completed it myself. Two thumbs up to Bioware!
I'm currently playing, and wow, what a game.
I chose a soldier class, but for some silly reason i've specialised in pistols.
I just became a spectre, so i'm probably very early in the game, but all i can say is wow.
the graphics are absolutely amazing.

Hey guys. Bought this game last night and i've got major crashing and freezing problems. Longest i've been able to play is about 15min before it either crashes to a bluecreen and then restarts the pc, or the picture just freezes and i have to manually reboot.
I'm running XP with C2D 1.8GHz, 1GB of DDR2-533 and a 8600GT Extreme Edition (with updated forceware drivers 175.19).
Anyone got any ideas how i might be able to fix this?

Do like the rest of us, wait for the patch. 
You might want to check out the technical forums at the bioware mass effect forums. I haven't checked there for a while, so I do not know about what issues have been sorted out and what not.

Game is decent but not anywhere near the previous great BioWare games. Also way too short. It took me longer to finish chapter 3 of Baldur's Gate 2 then to finish this entire game.
No date on the patch.
On the activation there isn't really an issue with the activation itself. The problem is 3 limited activations. After you use this up you have to call EA then are suppose to give you another activation. Problem is the guys you call don't have authority to do this so you have to wait to get your complaint up the ladder to a supervisor. This is taking 6 days in the US. The EU support office is doing a better job they seem to be helping straight away, have no idea in SA. The other issue is no one knows what hardware changes cause you to lose an activation.
