British woman faces jail in Dubai after sex on the beach

A British businesswoman allegedly caught having sex on a beach in Dubai has spoken of her 'dread' at a possible six-year prison sentence and branded the whole situation a 'silly mistake'.

Publishing firm manager Michelle Palmer, 30, was arrested after a police officer apparently saw her in a compromising position on Jumeirah Beach.

She has been charged with having sex outside marriage, indecent behaviour in public, being drunk in public and assaulting a police officer.

Her companion is understood to have been a British holidaymaker she met for the first time at a champagne brunch with work colleagues earlier that day.

The manager, who has worked in Dubai for three years, has also been sacked from her job with a magazine publishing firm as a result of the offences.

She faces a jail sentence of between three months and six years in the state, one of seven that makes up the United Arab Emirates which is known for its strict stance on sex and drugs.

Her case has sparked a storm of controversy among the many other British ex-pats living in Dubai, most of whom are incredulous at the prospect of anyone allegedly committing such a brazen breach of its laws.

In a message apparently posted on one Dubai blog site by Miss Palmer late last night, she says she made a mistake and is terrified about what might happen.

The message read: 'We have all made silly regretful mistakes in life, of which some pay all too dearly and if these blogs continue it could hinder my fate.

'I am good, I am kind and I am true. The fear I feel each time I close my eyes fills my heart with dread.

'Please imagine if it were you, this is punishment enough. I beg you all - please stop this chain of harmful blogs.... Please be sympathetic to those I love'.

The man also accused in connection with the incident last Friday has so far been named only as Vince.

It is claimed he and Miss Palmer were first seen kissing on the beach and cautioned by a police officer but ignored his warning and were caught having sex later.

The British woman allegedly hurled abuse at the officer and was arrested before being taken to a police station and charged.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: 'Two British nationals were arrested in Dubai. The case is currently under investigation.'

Miss Palmer and her companion are now due to go before Dubai's Court of First Instance. The date of their hearing has not yet been set.

This led to harassment of members of the public on some occasions, police involvement, and a tendency for some couples to move their activities to other locations and towards 'soft-swinging'.

Although mainly thought of as a purely British phenomenon, there is some evidence on the Internet that the 'craze' has recently begun to spread to other countries such as the U.S.A., Canada, Greenland, Australia, Barbados, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Poland.

That is crazy, but I suppose that if you are in a another country then you should have enough respect to abide to their laws.

Remember everyone... Consensual sex is far worse than beheading people! And so is smoking a joint. Very bad!!
Would it have been ok if she was wearing Black blankets from head to toe?

Well if a cop in SA walked up to a woman dressed in blankets and told her to take off the blankets to an acceptable level because it might put her in danger of dehydration, and its basically a fkn eye sore, do you think they would care? No cause it goes against their beliefs. Same thing here. Sounds like the cops are dcks in that country, and have nothing better to do than look for foreigners "offending" their people and beliefs lol. They all act like they have never fckd before. But they are alive, so they have. Whats the bet they all love porn too.

Dude again you fail to realise that you cant just do whatever you feel like in any country. And no, it would not have been ok if she was "wearing Black blankets from head to toe" Infact the lady wearing the "Black blanket" would probably not have done that in the first place.

Yes because their level of crime is so low that they can afford to look for offenders.....

Ps the cop was just doing his job, he did not make the laws he is just enforcing them.

Its not a crime to wear the "blankets" in south africa, so why would a SA cop even tell them to take it of in the first place?

Its a crime in dubai to have sex in public and to be drunk in public - that chic broke the law, and so she will suffer the consequences.

I have issues with religious nuts, who doesn't? Their crime is very low. Infact those guys that behead people and fight for God do not exist haha And their crime is so low that they can execute woman for nothing and put woman into jail for something like this. Yes, you are right their crime is very low. Too bad a whole bunch of disgusting things are legal, and a whole bunch of normal things are illegal. So I guess what you say means nothing really.
