View Full Version : Telkom's attempt at wireless : TZone
Telkom is now testing a wireless internet service called TZone. It seems if you have a wireless network card you can test it for free. See http://www.telkom.co.za/tzone/brochure/TZONEA4.pdf

Cool product, but I can see Telkom milking the crap out of it for money. Overpricing here we go again.... [}:)]

It is a short range WiFi product tied to so-called hotspot access points at Airports and Hotels. It is not a general Wireless service.
I read in December the thoughput's pretty crap, a few kb/s only, figures tho [;)]
Maybe/hopefully this could be a test phase for Telkom to roll out wireless services as well... nevertheless i still wouldn't go for it unless it's only a couple hundred beans a month.. after all they have screwed us in every way possible so far.

Just imagine where SA would be now if it weren't for Telkom
Personally I am not that excited about this. "Hot spots"? That's not wireless - more like bluetooth...

Just like ADSL. I'm getting a stunning 6.7kb/s from Microsoft at the moment.
Is the service still on a free trial basis for ADSL users?

Hello
We've been using the TZone located at BJ's on the M1 in Midrand. You log in using your current ADSL account.
All BW used adds up to your cap though - but it does still seem to be free. I must say I personally had exceptional throughput, not only that but it did seem like the port priotization issues were not around on that base station specifically - might have been my imagination.
While this is a short range service it is very usefull in a business context and I think the service will do well.

It definitely has its place. But it doesn't compete with MyWireless. I have seen these "Hotspots" at Singapore airport and they seem to be a good idea for travellers.
