Does anyone know how you actually go about obtaining the Ethernet cable from Fastcomm? Has anyone used it? Their premises seem to be located in Pretoria which is ever so slightly inconvenient if you're in, say, Johannesburg. I would really really really like to avoid using USB for something as critical as internet connectivity (not to mention the insanely high latency you get from USB devices). That said, does anyone know about using the device via USB under Linux?

Hi mithrandi,

My firewall is all setup and ready to do exactly this... if only I
had the modem!

As far as I understand you need a PPPoE client and an extra NIC
to connect too (assuming that you have a little internal LAN as
well).

When I get my modem, you can be sure to find me posting the HOWTO
here...

If only I had a modem...

Just out of interist.
I'm gonna be running freeBsd as my firewall.
Does it support bluetooth ?
And can I configure my internal network over bluetooth then ?
Any info ?

I've never played with FreeBSD's bluetooth offering, but the handbook seems to suggest that it is ready to work with the LAN/PPP/PAN/whatever its called Bluetooth profile. There was some talk of this on one of the FreeBSD mailing lists notsolongago. If I had a bit more energy I might have a look for you

You want to use the Ethernet connector. So get the cable from fastcomm. Privet and I went to visit fastcomm earlier today. We got two cables for R300. We walked out. Simple.

As for using it with Linux, learn how to configure PPPoE. Privet will be posting his HOWTO here the moment he gets his modem.

What does the connector on the modem-end look like?
If it's a standard type connector, then you can have it made for a fraction of the price...

It looks like the charger connector on the older Motorolla phones. Single inline pins, high-density. I count about 12 pins on there. About 20cm from the 12 pin connector there's a little box with a multi-colour LED on it, and about 2 meters further there's the RJ-45 connector.

The high-density connector looks like a Molex-type job, but the little box with the LED is sealed. Not sure if there's any other electronics in there like level converters, etc. No, I'm not opening mine!

!] So now I know Fastcomm have Ethernet connectors: good - finally they have the right stock! PPPoE is not an issue - I've been using it for eons, and I may even beat PRIVET to it regarding a HOWTO. The converse applies to USB, which I would've been forced to use had I not been able to get the required cables, which now seems to be the case. I'm going to Jakaranda City tomorrow anyway, and will pick up my own connectors after shifting my 'twinkly little ass'... [

mbs, I was responding to your point 5. in your previous post. I indicated how we got cables and that fastcomm is, in fact, not useless.

That said, I'd like to hear your results witht he ethernet cable once you have it. Fastcomm did let us know that "the cables are going fast" and that new stock must come in from the US which can take a bit fo time.
