I-Burst to ethernet switch w/o usb

Hi All

Please let me know if this question has been asked and answered before...

I just inherited an Iburst desktop modem and account from my brother (he emigrated), and want to know if it is possible to connect it to 2 pc's through an ethernet switch, without connecting it to one of the computers using the usb connection.

I already have it setup connecting usb and internet connection sharing and that works pretty well, but I don't want to have to boot the pc with the modem connected every time I want to go online.

Does any one know how to/if its possible to set it up so that the switch is connected like this:

Internet

|
---IBurst Modem---
|
|
---Ethernet Switch---
| |
| |
PC1 PC2
Do I need a router or can I get away with it as in the diagram?

One PC at a time will be able to authenticate to the modem, but this not ideal. The PC that is authenticating is using Internet Connection Sharing to allow your other PC to access the net

A router is well advised and as I said in another post, not only for the purpose of sharing the internet connection, it will also solve this problem
but I don't want to have to boot the pc with the modem connected every time I want to go online.

Additionally it will offer some form of protection against online threats. Using iBurps without a router is like having unprotected sex!

Why is that?

I have been an iBurst subscriber for over 2 years now. My contract just ended and I have gon on to a month to month sub.

To answer that question would take an inordinate amount of time. The best I can suggest is make some coffee/tea/open beer etc, put your feet up and start reading through the iBurst threads about what could and has gone wrong with this money hungry whoring company.

iBurst have uhm... a reputation of stealing money a.k.a. charging people for services rendered that they "forgot" to bill for 12-36 months down the line.

Are you using inretnet connection sharing? If not, how to you get the modem to connect and authenticate?
 
For the ics I use a proxy with the 3 of the 4 pc's. Main pc just dials iburst through regular windows (or linux) modem connection
 
I've done it that way too and it works but like I say, I have seen how hackers target the iBurps network I will never on a clean conscience plug an iBurps modem into a PC directly, especially not a Microsoft box!

I was hacked as recently as March this year, and I contained it because I had a router which protected my other machines because the port forwards were closed on the router. They tried to get into my linux server, and failed, they just cost me a whole lot of bandwidth :mad:

I think this month I got something like that... been getting a **** load of UDP bombs and UDP lands... I lost all 5gigs of bw on the 9th and last I saw I had 3.5gigs and it rocketed to 5gigs in one evening when my PC wasn't even on :(

How do you prevent UTP bomb???

Buy a modem with a WAN port, connect iBurst to this and connect other PC's through LAN ports. Or connect iBurst to modem which in turn is connected to switch and share that way.
 
By ics I mean that using the proxy it shares the internet connection between the pc's.

Re attacks... I iuse Sunbelt firewall which stops all such when using windows, when using ubuntu - firestarter

Hi

You'll have to get a router. I bought a linksys for R699 - and it's working very nicely. Now I can ditch the windows machine along with ICS. :)
