I'm using ADSL since 1 year.
I'm waiting each month the last day to download.

IT'S ENOUGH.

At 3 Gb, my traffic's automaticly transfered on a free proxy and it's FANTASTIC.

Why to pay for a free service when the people are "capped"?
I know, we're in Africa.

Are you trying to say that when you reach 3 gig your con connects automaticaly to a proxy server?

Well I will have to go into this proxy thing. I will need to get more data to be able to figure out. Im assuming one uses your local bandwidth to connect on the back of someone's leased line which has no cap? Or am I off the mark.

you don't "hack" a line.
you use a public server (like a web server) and it's legal.

In the majority of the case, the people use a classic connection (home to web server). When you use a a remote proxy, the way of you reqyest is home to the remote proxy (free and public), and remote proxy to web server.

There is nothing legal about using proxies, at this point companies/isp's dont take action due to embarrasment/couldnt be bothered. If more people start using them it could tip someone over the edge and then you might see a lawsuit [:(] The same concept of a shop owner leaving his shop unlocked at night by accident - someone comes in each night and feeds just themself, and therefore the shop owner doesnt notice. Imagine 20 people come feed themselvs [:p] owner not guna be happy.

I'm using free proxies since 5 years and never I had problems with the companies because the free proxyes are FREE and don't need username and password.

I'm think that "depach" is jealous because he(she)'s "capped" each month !!!!!

Yeah, depach, everyone is right. Public proxies are exactly that, PUBLIC. Are there any local proxy servers in SA that are public at the moment? Have not been able to find one recently.

I assure you that when 100 ADSL users start using a proxy its a bit different to when a handfull of people have been using it.

The south african proxies are not "open" or "public" they are MISCONFIGURED (Please paste here letters authorizing you to use the servers) and therefor the following in the ect act comes into effect:

As IS's proxies are listed 2ce, i might point you to a specific part in their AUP (http://www.is.co.za/datafile/std_content.asp?ISConstantsID=82)

All references to systems and networks under this section includes the Internet (and all those systems and/or networks to which user is granted access through IS) and includes but is not limited to the infrastructure of IS itself.

I got the point after the first post, I was correcting a statement made by someone, then got called stupid ... i find it funny that calling someone stupid, is following the original point - but we live in a world with lots of double standards so im used to it [;)]

It seems the appretiation on this forum for anything other than slandering telkom or people who dont share the same views is next to nothing.

Btw by using these local proxies, you are not hurting telkom, you are hurting companies that are in the same boat that you are in. The first chance people get in this country to abuse something - they take it.

If you so believe that using proxies is legal, then logon to telkomadsl's guest account, and set www.telkom.co.za port 80 as your proxy. [:D] if it doesnt work when u try they have proberly noticed it .

Mithrandi is right, you are missing the point. It's not that your view is different, it's that your view is WRONG. Public proxies are intended to be used by everyone, hence PUBLIC. They are not poorly secured company proxies that people are exploiting. If I decided to set up a proxy server and invited everyone to use it would it be considered illegal?
 
Please stop telling me that they are setup like this... show me a letter from SAIX, IS and connectIT that they are the case pls.

If you would like ill call the different proxie owners and get their opinion?

Do you imply that SAIX, IS and connectIT are incompetent in setting up proxies, incapable of detecting their misconfigurations and that these proxies people are using are theirs?

SAIX, IS and connectIT have NOTHING to do with this. If I run a proxy on bandwidth I have purchased, I am fully entitled to allow anyone I wish to use it. I am fully aware that everyone will be accessing it and therefore no law is broken. This would be considered a public proxy.

It is illegal if you obtain a means of using a company's proxy without their knowledge, however this would not be considered a public proxy. I think this is where you are confusing the issue. Go ahead and call one of the listed ISPs if you need reassurance about this.
