Can I connect to a dialup server with ADSL.

Hi there.

Could anyone help me please. I have to connect to the office with dialup so went looking to see if there is any software that could pretend I have a dialup modem and connect to the server. No luck. Any suggestions?

Hi

I doubt you will find anything like that to fake it the way you want to. If the only way into your office is via a modem (in other words there is just a modem at your office and no permanent Internet connectio) then you will need a modem on your side to dial into it. Your ADSL router will not do the trick. It doesn't have analog capabilities built in to make sounds over the line. Just plain old eletrical on and offs. [:D]

If your office is however connected to the internet permanently in some way you can ask your admin to put up a VPN or virtual private network for you to access the work network via ADSL. Much faster and much easier. If he for some reason doesn't want to (dumb as it would be) you can install free software onto your work PC (provided it is allowed by the company) and connect directly to your work PC via its IP... What is it that you want to do when you connect and what OS are you running on your office server and your client machine? Also There may be other options available...particularly if your office has a permanent connection.

Hi there.

Thanks all for the comments. As for the machines. I am running xp at home and trying to connect to a winnt workstation server. I know, they have less at work than I have at home. But it is like you said, they are either too dense or too hard headed to understand that a VPN poses no risk to their network. I will look at pcanywhere and some of the others thanks.

I think I'd better rationale my moniker. It reflects a different viewpoint of life and the world in general. I could as well have said "yaw eht nidrrym ksA". It's more a philosophy than trying to be funny. Just always look at everything from everyone's viewpoint.

You can! Mail the document to me via ADSL and I will route it via my PC to my Fax printer combo...

Well, If you have a fax machine or a fax modem hooked up to your adsl phone line you should be able to fax

[:D] @ Antowan, good one , and the fee for what I actually want would creep up as I see Nocap is now R499 from R99. My last modem is a 128k ISDN modem with fax but I doubt it would be able to make sense of the adsl line if it doesnt totally f*** it up. I am going to have to hunt down my old 56k usb modem and try that after scraping off all the dust. [:)] I did look at some of the remote pc offerings, pcanywhere, realvnc and tightvnc etc but for me to connect via those is going to eat bandwith at a pace that would have me not connecting to anything by the 3rd day of the month, just exaggerating (before anyone screams at me). On top of that one of these wants a monhly subscription and as it is after telkom, isp, nocap it is already starting to get a bit expensive. On a brighter note I have screamed and shouted and cried like a baby at work and got promised VPN by april so only one month.

Thanks for everyone's contributions. Maybe I will write some software to emulate phone tones as ADSL is effectively and infinity receiver so theoretically could fiddle with it.

I seriously doubt you could do anything with analog signals on ADSL line. But let me know...

Oh yes, real VNC is not that bandwidth hungry. Only changes sections on screen that really do change. Quite nice...

It's not as good as Citrix, though. (More commonly known as MS Terminal Server / Remote Desktop / etc.)

yea like, Winframe &gt; all. VNC is kinda crap IMHO, there are way better apps for windows, and I'd just use a remote X server for linux rather than use VNC.
