Johannesburg - South African companies are taking advantage of social networking website Facebook as a cheaper and more efficient way of marketing their businesses.

"Facebook opens a social networking platform that allows companies to engage on a more personal level at a fraction of the cost," says Mike Stopforth, the CEO of online reputation management company Cerebra which works with companies like SA's biggest retail bank, Absa, on their Facebook presence.

Facebook has become a very popular platform for South Africans with online access; Facebook says there are 683 943 users registered on its South Africa network grouping.

According to international internet information company Alexa, the South Africa network is the sixth largest among country networks on Facebook.

It also reported that Facebook is the second-most visited site in South Africa.

Local internet advocacy group MyBroadband says that the average duration of a Facebook session for South African employees with internet access is 30 minutes.

im sorry - but facebook sux. Was cool the first week - but then lost interest with all those ridiculous applications, spam "friends" and half the apps doesnt even work. VIVA mybb!!
 
I don't like facebook much either, it takes over peoples lives worse than heroine or crack :D

On a different note though, I tried finding out about advertising on FB, and it was just so confusing I gave up.

And this is good how? A couple of sessions a day and lots of lost productivity.
 
Its good for Stopforth who's fleecing idiots like ABSA out of good money to advertise
to expats and children on Facebook.
 
facebook is fine if you use it to stay in touch.

people who have their lives taken over by facebook unfortunately never had one to begin with. its also a good way to avoid working on a thesis.
 
What is this "facebook" everyone keeps talking about?
Where can I buy one? I want to see if my face is in this book.

Nice to meet you. Thanks for the kind words. I may not be as advanced a MyADSL user as some but where I come basic netiquette says says that you at least link to someone you flame so they can respond.
