Using a router?

Does anyone have their modem working with a router connected? We tried "installing" a router this evening, but we can't seem to get it to work. The LAN worked fine and at one stage the modem connected, but we couldn't connect to anything on the internet. I know NOTHING about this stuff, so maybe if someone knows of a step-by-step guide, it would be greatly appreciated. We did follow the manual, but some things aren't very clear. We will probably try again on the weekend, when everyone isn't so stressed :P
 
Weeel. Firstly it depends on what type or router you're using? The most important quality of your router it it's ability to support PPPoE. If it can't do that then you're not going to get out of the starting blocks.

Most broadband SOHO routers today support PPPoE so you should be fine. You need to hook up your modem to the WAN port of the router (if it has a dedicated WAN port), configure the PPPoE settings and make sure your router is doin NAT (NEtwork Address Translation) for you.

The basic checklist is:
Router establishing a PPPoE connection
IP address range assigned to machines on the LAN side of the router
Router routing addresses from one interface to another
Router mapping internal IP addresses to the single IP address assigned by Sentech when modem connects.

Get those working and you should be fine. Post some more detail about your router & its capabilities if you still need some more help.

I'm doing all of this but using a Linux machine with 2 NIC's as my router (and DHCP server, web cache, traffic shaper, etc) and it works like a dream.

Well apart from those rotten disconnects, but that's another thread.
 
Argh! I messed around with the settings on the router today and now I can't log in to it...says something like "Duplicate Administrator..This device is managed by *.*.*.* currently!! Argh! My hubby is gonna *kill* me when he gets home. LOL. I should just leave all this stuff to him..prob is he doesn't know either this time.
PS : Thanks for the reply but I really don't know what any of those setting are. My TCP/IP setting are to obtain IP address automatically and that didn't make the router work so I assigned an IP address and that's how everything got messed up [:(]
 
The router typer is *reads box* : Prime Access, Built-in-4-Port 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Switch; Broadband ADSL/Cable soho router
 
You don't need PPPoE etc etc.

All you need is a properly configured TCP/IP network (usually meaning each PC has its own IP in the range 192.168.0.x and "mask" 255.255.255.0 and similar for the router - many routers has DHCP builtin to do the job for you) and then set you Gateway on you PC's to the IP of your router.

It is as simple as that.

My friend told me the gateway should be 192.168.1.254 ... whats the difference between that and 192.168.1.1, which I now know is the IP of the router ;) Thanks for all the help so far ;)
 
Okay, got everything set up again...this time the router connected to the internet, but I couldn't. Anyone know why that could be?
 
On a additional note. We have the ethernet cable from Fastcomm, that plugs into the router. Now someone told me to try the ethernet cable straight into the pc and get it working that way first, then try the router again. The problem is when I plug it into my pc, the modem says the port is already busy or something. Do I need to reinstall the modem software? I can't remember if the ethernet connection was one of the options when you install?
 
Well this is what I would do...

Firstly ensure that DHCP is enabled on the router and establish a connection and connect the cables up. Ensure that on your PC your TCPIP settings you have obtain IP address and DNS automatically.

Reboot your computer, go into command prompt and type ipconfig /all -check that you have an ip address / DNS it should be something like 192.168.0.x. If not then you DHCP might not be configured on the router.

Ping the IP address of the router and then ping a web site e.g. www.sentech.co.za to see if you can resolve names. If you can get this far then it should be working fine.
 
Hi

I have tried to get my MyWireless modem to talk to a Planet broadband router, with no success. The nice people at Planet are refunding me for the router, so now I am looking for any advice on a PPPoE broadband router that works simply with this mywireless device.

It seems to be common that when one plugs the ethernet cable from the mywireless into a broadband router, the lan port lights do not light up.

I would go for a linux router if you can supply me one for R500.00 :)

any other ideas or recommendation?

YAY! It's working! My friend told me yesterday to change the MTU to 1420 and it's working like a dream. I also read about the MTU elsewhere on the forum, so that's great :)

Just a question...when I lose the internet connection the router doesn't "dial out" automatically. It only connects if I switch it on and off and do the same on the modem. Does anyone know how to go about getting this to work automatically?

LOL and *poof* not working. It works, then all the lights on the router flashes on, it disconnects, says network cable unplugged...few seconds later...it works again. It's very frustrating...think I will go the ICS route...never had all this frustration with it.
 
Look on the bright side, at least you're learning about this stuff and won't have to pay someone to come out everytime something small goes wrong. [:)]
 
lol yeah my head is swimming with ip addresses and mtu's :P
 
i would also use a linux box... seeing as you already have your connection... download linux (any version) load it onto any old pc like a old p2 4giga.

read up abit about the version u downloaded. it realy isnt that hard.
linux documentation is GREAT and easy to understand!
 
Has anyone managed to get mywireless working (with an ethernet cable) with a Netgear router?
I am looking at model rp614 which does what I need (NAT plus internet sharing).

Any experiences/advice will be appreciated.

Clive, any SOHO router that supports PPPoE should suit you fine. But a Linux box offers plenty of other fun goodies too. You can host a web server, ftp server, etc on it. Of course, you can also do all this with a router and some inbound NAT & Port redirection (assuming your router supports it).

It's also worth lookking for a router that supports on of the Dynamic DNS services (I know Netgear do).

Make sure whatever router you go for has a decent support web site though. These things have all mannenr of bugs in them and the firmware is constantly being upgraded. You don't want to get stuck with a dodgy Korean job with no bugfixes in a couple of months.

Go for a Linux box, it's fun (he says remembering may long nights using RPM, tar, ftp & make)

It doesnt seem like any router works...I tried the Planet router, and when one plugs the ethernet cable in, no connection, no lights, no nothin...

Before I go and buy a netgear or some other make, I would like to hear if anyone plugged their mywireless into a router and got it running easily. ???

I may go for linux as an option, althogh I do like a simple dedicated box as first prefernce.
