Site very slow - no clue on whats wrong

Hi All

Sorry for the low post count, i need some help

I own this site:
www.DigitalSAonline.co.za

Here is my issue:
Site is very slow, taking up to 4 mins + to load pages

What i have done:

1 - Ping works fine with 400ms response time
2 - Tracert site, no issues
3 - DG834D V4 Netgear modem reset and firmware update - done
4 - Tried 3 different ISP accounts, Telkom, Axxess, SAOL - still does the same
5 - Clear cookies and cache - still does the same
6 - Format, load fresh windows - still does the same

I have no clue why its doing this now, telkom has tested the line there are no issues on it
no changes to my PC since Wed night, issue started on Thursday
FTP is quick and works, webmail for the domain is quick and works, but if i load the site the activity light on the modem does nothing

Does anyone have any ideas for me to try?
 
I've just opened your site and it loaded fine for me on 4mbps ADSL on SAIX.

You mention you tried Telkom, Axxess and SAOL, this is all on the SAIX (Telkom) network,

I would suggest you ask a friend with an Internet Solutions account if you can borrow his details and test it that way, to narrow down if it's SAIX or not.

I would also suggest you head over to www.webafrica.co.za and purchase 1GB Prepaid "Unshaped", it costs about R85 and you can use it when you please, it doesn't expire.

Test with both IS and an unshaped account.

Getting another "test" router from someone and trying it could also be a solution.

To expand on my post. From Axxess they have a Semi Shaped offering also on the Internet Solutions network, buying a prepaid GB if you don't have a friend on IS could be the best.

The reason I say you should purchase one from WebAfrica as well (unshaped) is that you can "choose" to run it on Verizon or SAIX, thereby finding a network that works.

If any of the above solutions don't work, don't leave without saying anything, there's a few knowledgeable people here ;)

Hi guys

Thanks for the replies, all other inter sites work fine, so im not sure if its the modem
Will try find a mate who has a Webafrica account to test with, so far no one is having issues but me

Some more info

I am using my companies 30gig loca/inter Axxess Account at home, as we use it at the office on our 3 DSL lines as well

If i RDP onto a server at the office which uses the Axxess account for internet access and load my site, it works fine, so i dont think its a ISP thing

I have another machine here at home on my router as well and its doing the same thing

If i use a online proxy server to load my site such as this: http://www.zend2.com/
My site loads like it should, within 3sec's

I am so lost its just not funny anymore
 
Okay, well that speaks to me of a busted network adapter on the system itself.

It may be a long shot. But is this a laptop or desktop? If it's a desktop and you have an NIC spare, stick it in and try it again,

You said you formatted and it's still not working, so I doubt it's a Windows issue as well.

On second note, swop the Ethernet cable to another port on your router as well, it may very well be that the specific port on the router might be faulty, I've had that issue on a router before ;) Could be the cable itself as well.

Remember to report back.

Sorry but not sure its the NIC as i have 2 x desktops here doing the same thing, the router has 4 ports and i have tried on the others as well

Any more ideas

I misread,

So this actually happens on both machines at your home? But not on a remote desktop or proxy connection?

Enter this proxy in your browser quickly:

cache.saix.net port: 8080

Try to open your site and tell me if it works.

Ok, you're not applying it correctly.

Firstly, I'd suggest getting firefox 3 here:

www.getfirefox.com

Now, install firefox (make sure not as default browser, if you prefer IE)

Open Firefox, click Tools>Options>advanced>network
Click manual proxy, now type in cache.saix.net and at the port, type in 8080

Now, click "use proxy for all protocols".

Try to access your site.

Report back what happens, if it improves in loading time or not.

It basically boils down to SAIX. Like I said in the initial post.

Using an unshaped account or an account on the IS network will avoid this problem, specifically if you use a WA unshaped account on Verizon.

This is actually the SAIX "transparent proxy" causing your problems.

In essence, all dialup and ADSL users in South Africa use the internet through a "proxy" although it's not configured in their browsers, it's configured at network level with SAIX (Telkom).

I'd suggest going to www.saix.net and typing a formal letter. Please include your ADSL Telephone number and any details you can think of.

Report the issue to them and maybe provide a link to this thread, so they can understand what's happening.

I've found problems with SAIX on Digg.com, Microsoft sites and Youtube.com and the list goes on.

If you have any problems on certain sites and are using an SAIX based ISP on ADSL, just configure that proxy I gave to access the sites correctly.

I'm not sure about the technical details why it works, I assume it bypasses the normal routing/proxy methods and accesses the websites from an external cache, but I might be wrong.

On a side note, I've visited your site in the past about 10 times or more, I'm just flat broke, so I haven't bought anything. I got the link to it at myadsl (here), so check your hosting logs if you see a thread linking to your site and respond to the members here if they have queries, that's what we like around here.

Try to get more active, we're a real bunch of hard arses, but we love each other at heart ;)

Dude - Your site & ikonicit.co.za are on one of my 'special' blacklists. Cause it loads so UBER slow. I properly fumed when I saw this the first time. Some of the images used on both these sites are Huge. They invented thumbnails for a reason you know! :mad:

Now look at This. That is the image that you are using in the main catalog. It is 'huge'. You can clearly see on the first page that the image is being pushed into a small block as you cannot read what is on the chip. Same for the 'Mice' picture. Use a proper thumbnail on the site and then make the image on the product detail page clickable so that the 'huge' image is still available.

Don't know if this is part of your problem though. The site loads fine after I've blacklisted *.jpg on your site. :confused:

Bro, must be your connection or something, both those links you posted opened under 2 seconds for me.

Don't be too hard on the guy ;)

Edit: the Core2 pic is under 30kb in any case, that should rocket on any connection :confused:

Yeah - some of the graphics do seem a bit excessive.

Your site is on a shared host in the US so perhaps there was a problem there or somewhere along the route.

I really have no reason to be biased bwananizer and Idle, but ever since the first time I opened digitalsaonline it has always performed well for me.

A slight reduction with something like Irfanview (batch convert to lower quality) might be beneficial, but it's definitely not "blacklist" bad :D ;) :p
