In a third experiment, the macaques were given daily shots of FTC and higher doses of tenofovir before being exposed to the primate HIV virus. Lead researcher Walid Heneine says that provided 100 percent protection, as did another regimen in which the macaques received the FTC-tenofovir combination two to three hours before exposure to the virus and 24 hours after each weekly exposure.

Guess Zuma was right after all!! He's "herbal" soap must have contained FTC and tenofovir

And push it.... and 1... 2... 1...2 get that postcount up now! :D

By the looks of it, it can be taken before and after then you're set! Doesnt seem like you will have to take it for life.

Might be intresting, much like a morning after pill :p

Interesting:

Side effects?
Wiki: Tenofovir can cause acute renal failure, fanconi syndrome, proteinuria, tubular necrosis. These side effects are due to accumulation of drug in proximal tubule.

Emtricitabine is not so bad.

Never really knew how these drugs work. Looked it up and it is quite interesting.

Both are nucleotide analogues and inhibit the HIV reverse transcriptase (RT) enzyme. The HIV-RT enzyme hijacks your body's resources to incorporate its genome into yours. Once it is incorporated into your genome you are stuck with it for life where the incorporated HIV genome hijacks your own system's replication structures to make copies of itself. These drugs prevent the activity of the HIV-RT enzyme and thus genomic incorporation.

Their structures:

Mechanism?:
Here is a the molecular structure of the HIV-RT caught in the act of reverse transcription.

Here is the nucleotide incorporation site:

And here is the HIV-RT enzyme trying to incorporate Tenofovir.

Tenofovir and Emtricitabine inhibit the activity of the HIV-RT enzyme by preventing the correct nucleotides from being incorporated.

So these molecules are the first line of defense. However once HIV is incorporated into your genome it becomes another problem altogether. Learn something new everyday :p.
