Getting ADSL and things to watch out for

Hi there

As you might know I've had it up to here with IBurps...
I have never had a Telkom service as I've strived to boycott them for a long time. However I do need internet access and I can no longer take iBurps's nonsense and poor quality and their fscking shaping to death of anything except HTTP.

The first step is to get a phone line? Right? Or can one apply for an ADSL line straight?

Please just let me know a summary of what to do as I do not want VAS crap or anything else. I just want the line and then I've already got my ISP of choice lined up.
 
Get the phone line from Telkom, then support an indepedent supplier and get the ADSL line and service from someone else, WebAfrica, for example. In fact, anyone who sponsors this site is a good supplier. They will handle the installation for you.
 
I'm sure you have looked at all options and made your decision already but why did you not go with 3G/HSDPA from MTN or Vodacom?

Then you have a decent connection without using Telkom.
 
Firstly when you apply for adsl, make sure you tell them its for a business, this will move you up the queue.

Dont take a DO package and as someone mentioned use Webafrica,Openweb, axxess etc for bandwidth.

Also remember they charge you for 2 months on your first statement.

Boycott telkom all you like but the only loser in the situation is you, sure telkom are expensive but compared to iburst and the hsdpa networks they are dirt cheap.

Dont screw yourself and get adsl man.

Do not go through anyone else for a line but telkom, it will just take longer and they do not follow it up well, apply and phone telkom everyday for a status update.
Vodacom and mtn are good options but expect to pay through your arse for bandwidth.

Not guaranteed - best to test with a borrowed 3g modem 1st. You may end up going from out of the iburst frypan and into the vodacom / mtn fire.

My previous phone had 3G that I could plug into my PC. Sorry Vodacom's network is far too unstable. It worked 2/10 times that I used it when iBurps was down. I can't even get through in emergencies and another forumite on this forum vodacom3g denies anything is wrong.

I handled the upgrade of an existing ADSL line at my new job and I was surprised to learn how stable the thing is. I need that stability at home, but seeing that I have a registered company it seems I can get the phone line easier.

OK, advice taken, I will get a phone line first, then a bandwidth provider. I want to get at home, what we have at the office, which is a MWEB BUSINESS package because it is faster than iBurps ever was and the ping times are remarkable, oh and it is unshaped too.
 
If you apply for Closer 2 and above you get free line installation and then you can cancel the closer service a couple of months later. Do that and then once you've got the line installed apply for self install through Telkom for your ADSL line and then get your ADSL account from another ISP.

The ISP doesn't matter, don't shoot yourself in the foot with Mweb Business, they are terribly over-priced. If you need unshaped bandwidth then you can get it elsewhere much cheaper.
 
That is the best option, get your line through Telkom as you also get better post installation support. Their helpdesk is also pretty good despite the loooong wait. If you get it from another ISP you usually start getting the run around. The ISP is your choice. WebAfrica is a great choice. I also have a 1gig Telkom account that I usually let rip close to the end of the month and get way over a gig without paying for more.
