What kind of wireless technology is used for the wugs? (Is it WiMax or related?)

Basically, I'm wondering if it's WiMax, or if WiMax equipment can be used?

If so, would you be able to use the same equipment to connect to the net via WiMax and connect to the wug at the same time?

Two birds with one stone so to speak.
 
And how does WiFI differ to WiMax? (Layman explanation will suffice)
 
No, wimax is a completely different standard to wifi, they use different frequencies and protocols.
 
Isn't there any hardware that can switch between the two or something maybe?

The two technologies are just too different.

If you want to connect to a wug the best thing is to buy the right equipment the first time. I know of people that hastily went and buy wifi equipment only to realize they don't have LOS to a WUG high-site or that the antenna/router is for the wrong frequency. If you are serious about joining a WUG join their forum or irc channel before you do anything else, the wifi community is a very helpful and friendly bunch and will be able to tell you exactly what you need and if you will be able to connect.
