I must say this has been the most boring product launch in a while. Essentially the GeForce 9800 GT is the same as the GeForce 8800 GT. Same performance, same specs, same GPU. The only difference is the 9 instead of the 8 in the product name, Purevideo HD and support for Hybrid Power. Are these worth making a new product? No. But we have to admit that the GeForce 9800 GT does fit in the NVIDIA product stack at this point, GeForce 9 has not been about innovation anyway so far. Nevertheless the card comes at an attractive price and offers performance to play all of today's games just fine.
Zotac added a custom-colored PCB and higher clocks to their GeForce 9800 GT Amp! Edition to make this product at least a bit more interesting. The higher clocks and high overclocking potential make this product certainly more useful, but you have to pay a price premium for it. Unless you need the GeForce 9 Series features (you probably don't), stick with the GeForce 8800 GT and save a few dollars, unless the price difference is only $5 or $10 to get a GF9 card.

Actually I believe the G8x cores were suppose to be the 8 series.

The G9x cores were all meant to be 9 series anyways.

Nvidia just renames the G9x core 8 series to gain some quick market share

Just a personal opinion though.

And from tweaktown I read the 9800GT review, its almost the same as the 4850
 
Despite being a huge fan of the 8800GT and loving NVidia's drivers much more than AMD/ATI's, at this particular time, the 4850 seems to be better value for your money.
 
Well PCZone has Asus 9800GT Tops (650Mhz) for R1899...

AFAIK the standard 9800GT performs pretty much on par with the 8800GT... I imagine the OC would be a little better.

Although, the 8800GT Alpha Dog XXX is around the same price now.
I reckon it would boil down to things like temperature, overclock-ablity etc

So Tweakdown rekons 9800GT is better than 9800GTX/+ and cheaper? :D
 
I wonder if Nvidia realises that we "On To Them" with the whole product renaming... this is getting ridicules, i mean the whole 9 series is just a renamed 8 series, and the 8 series is a year old technology, maybe more... things don't look to good from the green team
 
so is this card worth it? I was thinking of this or an ati 4850 BUT if this card is around R1800-R1900 mark, then i might get it and then buy an sli mobo so later on i can just buy another 9800gt, what you think?
 
I think if landmarkpc has a 4850 for 1.95k and this card for 1.8k - 19k then i would rather go for the 4850

It performs much better with AA on and future drivers will make it better.

The GT has less heat, slightly higher power consumption and less performance when AA and AF is enabled....so yeah.

Ati said from the 2900 series that the drivers where poor and they would get better, they never did.

They said the drivers of 3xxx series would get better, they never did.
 
I think the 4 series' drivers are pretty good.

And the new drivers for the 3 series "apparently" give u a 5percent boost.

I dunno though, since i'm using the agp version of the 3850....
