South African All Black supporters

Not sure if this still happens. Does it? It used to happen during apartheid where people would support any opposition team. This was seen as a way of demonstrating their anger at the status quo in the country.
 
Yup, happens every single time the topic is brought up. Its all from the older generation. They have however breeded their kids to support them as well.

So there are a bunch of All Black supporters out there that are south africa.

They will all give the same excuse ''we like the structure, and the way the AB's play'' :D

Well no need for me to comment on this topic further as I think many of you are fully aware of my views on the matter!! :) ;)

I honestly would not be able to explain it. I can appreciate another team's ability but if the truth be known I'd rather not see the ABs play well when they play us. If they play cr_p and we thump them then all the better for me! :)
 
about 200k south africans living in Oz and NZ, these were one of the most extreme white-power supporters in our land, yet people are still supporting the country where they are going to. dumb!
 
I support the AB whenever they play unless it's against the Boks and yes I appreciate the game and watching it played properly.

The same with cricket. The Australians are incredibly entertaining to watch. One can only admire and appreciate the skill they bring to the game.

It's not a question of being unpatriotic, it's a question of appreciating good sport and being a good sport.

One thing I learnt to hate was watching the West Indian cricket spectators in the West Indies. The crowd is so partisan that regardless of the oppositions heroics they get nothing but muted silence. You ask yourself, why do they not applaud good cricket? If they didn't want to see good cricket why did they not just go watch the team practice in the nets?

In 1997 SA beat France at the parc de princes 52-10. It was a spectacular performance by the Boks and the French crowd rose to their feet and applauded the Boks as they left the field. They appreciated and respected what they had witnessed. It makes them no less patriotic and it shows dignity in defeat...

So I consider myself a South African who supports the AB's whenever they play but not if it's against SA!!!! Boks all the way..

...but now you might be talking about something totally different. When the crowd turns on their own team when they are performing really badly. This is when you start getting them booing their own players and eventually cheering the opposition.

I think the OP is referring to people who are "full time" supporters of opposition teams. And often this stems from the fact that they are not South African, rather than their ability to play.
 
I know a lot of coloured guys are All Black supporters - this stems from the days of Apartheid, and not supporting a country that doesn't support them, or something.
 
A rugby fanatic explained this to me a few days ago. (wtf is up with all the coincidences lately) He said its because of the (somewhat) similar appearance of the Mauri people in the All blacks & the people on the Cape flats. The cape coloureds couldn't identify with the all-white SA team & the Mauri on the All Black team were the next best thing.

Dunno if its true...

Perhaps it is but 15 years into democracy and any South African who shouts for the opposition is a bit of a cop out regardless of who that opposition might be...

But pre 1994 I can understand...

I know i'm slightly off topic, but a lot of white and Indian people went to loftus to support Manutd playing against Chiefs. Asked for their reasons for doing this, they claimed to appreciate the way the game was played by Manu. Rather shallow if you ask me.
 
a couple of people i know who support the ABs say its due to how they play the game.
 
The leader of the Cape Town All Blacks supporters club was interviewed on Cape Talk about 3 months ago by John Maytham (I'm 99% sure it was John).

John questioned the chap along the lines of 'isn't your support for the AB's racist?' and the chap responded with vague references to the fact the the AB's play the best rugby in the world. After being pressed for a while by John the overwhelming impression I was left with was that their support is totally racially motivated and quite sad. Just my view though and it must be added that John was specifically probing the racist issue and not a sports issue.

I had a colleague who used to wear his AB shirt to work of Friday's when SA Super12 teams played the NZ ones. He got a lot of abuse but was also fairly vocal in his response to the abuse and his responses where almost always racial/racist and not sports related.
 
Aren't there more Maoris in the AB squad than blacks in the SA squad usually?
 
There are people who are now supporting foreign teams as they believe that the current SA teams (cricket and rugby) are quota teams and not chosen on merit. I understand the view especially when one looks at Stofile's constant interference in rugby - the only sport where we are actually world champions.
