I only got ADSL during last month. Just how slow is international when you get capped.

Can anyone give me some average download speeds, i know it will also depend on where u are downloading from, but just an average.

Hi there

In general it is extremely slow. It is almost not worth the time. But on the other hand I recently read some interesting reports on this forum of people who have had reasonable "capped" international browsing speeds.

Well - I am currently using a capped account and international browsing is impossible, let alone trying to download something. Not even MSN messanger works.

This was my experience as well when I got capped... [:(]

I was the Capped Person that experienced faster speeds for a week or so. But now it’s useless again.
So I took the opportunity to exploit Saix's and Gamezone’s FTP. I have merrily downloaded 4 or 5 gigs the last day or so just for good measure. As I won’t waste my cap on local ftp sites when I’m not capped.

Once you have been capped once or twice you begin to not worry about it anymore. I have been browsing local websites and ftps. In actual fact you will realise just by looking at my Usage that when you are Capped you actually download more. So Telkom's theories are all irrelevant and unfounded. I could only see their point if someone downloaded music and movies from international sites day and night. I’m certainly not one of those people.

I agree with BTTB, I download a lot more after im capped

ie. i was capped on 09/03 thats 3 gigs in nine days = 330 megs per day
total usage until yesterday 30/03 is 18.36 gigs = 730 megs per day from the 10th onwards

Howdy Syn.

Also most of my Usage this monthy was the kids playing CS on Karoo or Saix. I have my Nephew here who is trying to do his Matric through Intec. He spends the evenings playing CS. And my son and his friend play on weekends. So a high percentage of Usage is playing games on lacal SA Servers.
Its just unfortunate that Telkom are playing the all to familiar "deaf game" as its going to cost them sooner or later.

Yeah you guys are right.

I Downloaded Americas army 2 and wolfenstein: enemy territory off http://games.saix.net. was about 800 megs. downloaded quick quick.

My main problem is my bandwidth that gets wasted on uploading. I do a lot of uploading because i am a freelance webdesigner. So when i am re-uploading like 3 sites about 5 times a day it really starts to add up.

<br />But I have heard ppl say it only drops to 56k.... Is this not ture then?

Nope what happens is it gets routed into a teribly shaped queue along with everyone else who is capped, so naturaly depending on how many people are capped, and how many are trying to download internationaly depends on how well your speeds fair.
