I've been wondering, with a population of about 1 billion people, one would think that a country such as India with so many people would have some athletes participate in the olimpic games, but there aren't any. I was just wondering why not? Evn countries such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and other middle earstern country are no where to be seen on the medals table or even on the sporting events. Ultimately my question is, why isn't India participating in the olympics?

India won their first ever gold medal at this Olympics. They're in 50th position on the medal table, Iran are 51st - both of them ahead of SA in 70th. 
Pak and Saudi Arabia didn't win any medals but were competing.

Sport is not high on the to do list for most Indians. At school most of them hardly took part in any extra curricular sporting codes. They just went home.
India and Pakistan are pretty much only regarded for their cricketers, and hockey players (not of late).
