The title basically says it all; every time the phone rings (doesn't have to be answered) the line disconnects, sometimes we have to restart the router.

Anyone have an idea as to what the problem could be?

Thanks in advance :) Ciao

It could be a problem with one of your ADSL filters. Try ringing your landline with the phone(s) unplugged, and then try to eliminate which one is causing the problem.

But to be honest, I have the same problem... And it didn't go away when I did that. :p But I think it might have something to do with the awful alarm system my house has, which is connected to the phone line...

I have a alarm system fitted and all is fine my side...
Have you tried using the adsl micro filter that they supply you with?

it is definately the POTS filter that is used to seperate the ADSL and voice frequency. You need one on each analogue device like phones and fax machines.

Our line has two line plugs (we can connect two devices to the same point in the wall), one goes directly into the Router, while the other connects to the phone line - I've installed a new filter, didn't work.

Oh, we don't have an alarm system so it can't be that.

But I'll other suggestions made, thanks for your help guys.

If I figure out what I did to make it work, I'll let you know.

Thanks again :)

Yes, the filter is connected to the wall point plug with the phone connected to the filter while the Router is connected directly to the other wall point plug.

no extensions? fax machines?

Try different phone make if you have one lying around.

Tried that too. We have three different types of phones, a normal cord phone, a cordless phone and a phone/fax/printer. I disconnected the phone/fax/printer a long time ago, thinking that it was perhaps the fax that caused the line drop: but that didn't work. I tried the corded phone, same problem and now with the cordless as well.

thb, I haven't disconnected the phone entirely and seeing if that works - if it does work, it means there is a problem with the filter not so?

but, if it doesn't work, then, logically, there is a problem with the line itself?

My ADSL stays up when I get a phone call or a fax. I would suspect that your line filter is faulty.

Try calling your line with the filter and the phone disconnected. If it causes trouble then, yes, you have a line problem - but make sure you've really disconnected everything except the router. Don't even have surge protectors attached for this test - they, too, can fail.

Then try with just the filter and no phone. But if this works, it doesn't prove the filter is fine, just that there was nothing from the phone to be filtered.

I'll give it a try when I get home, shot :)

Unplugged everything except the router and it still disconnects, going to give Telkom a call on Monday, but I first want to have a chat with my ISP, see if they have any ideas.

Thanks for all your help guys.

If the problem gets sorted, I'll post how we got it working :)

Cheers
