I also downloaded a Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer @ a speed of 8.5 Mbps.. Maybe it was cached? Thats fskin fast anyways!

That line is pretty impressive anyways... How do they achieve such speeds? Does anyone know how much this would cost and who the ISP is?

EDIT: At UP you can get decent speeds sometimes, but I think out of all the universities UCT has the biggest pipe...
 
They use NEOTEL network, you are sucking all the bandwidth.
I will have to check with the IT Guys, why you getting such good speeds.
It should not happen or unless they've not shaped your account.


I remember working there back in the days, when they use to crap everyone out for consuming bandwidth..
Perhaps they allow you to use 250 Meg of bandwidth then they reduce your speeds to like 6 KB :(

What do you guys do with all that internet power? I'm going to UJ next year btw. :)
 
We get throttled at UP in the open labs :( We get a whole 66Kbps on download, but 2.5Mbit/s upload if I remember correctly :D
 
UJ is on SANREN already with a 10GB internet link and 10GB peering link with IS. I do not think they use all of that 10GB yet though (a bakkie load of other problems, mostly money wise :) , it brings) Might be 1GB only atm.

The final design for SANREN is pretty impressive with almost all universities with 10GB pipes and multible peering links nationally.

WKJ?:beanie: any suggestions mate? :P If it is logical I'll look into it!

they should b running off the tenet3 network..
UJ has 10mb pip3.i think.

The best I got at TUKS was on a Saturday when the labs where almost empty, 1 MB per second sustained for about 20-30 seconds after which the download was finished! (to an international server, not off the local lan :p). It was quite sweet :)

I needed a download accelerator with quite a few threads though...
 
Best I did at TUKS was when we switched over to Neotel and I was the ONLY one on the link testing connectivity. 6MB/s sustained, 4.5GB in 12min :D

I cannot wait for our Neotel link though, hopefully by Feb. NIC line speed access to the rest of SA!! Whoohoo :P
