Replaced my stock 4850 cooler with Artic Cooling Twin Turbo (Pics uploaded).

I am updating this thread all the time so please look out for new contents.

Got the cooler from Itai during lunch today, arrived at home around 6pm and worked on it until 9pm.

Before with stock, idle at 80+ degrees, now idle at 56 (core 650 2100 mem).
Noise level noticable at around 5XX RPM, remember it's dual fans. A bit more noiser than stock.

Installation should be quite simple, but it took me 3 hours.......


1) This is a cooler requires 2 extra slots excluding your graphics card. Check spacing before you purchase!!! Although the official specs said its height is34mm, that's BS. the whole thing is like 50mm+ high. You need two empty slots to be able to fit this cooler.

I have got Asus Xonar D2X which is a PCI-EX sound card, occupied one slot but because the official specs said its height is 34mm, I measured and thought I can use it. No!!! I have to somehow squeez my sound card somewhere else (explained later).

2) [delete]Voltage Regulator Heatsinks. The VR heatsinks provided is not enough to cover all 4850's VR modules, you guys need to make a plan. I used two of my spare RAM heatsinks from my other cooler. [/delete]

3) Installation guide tell you something like measure distance from centre to bottom and if less than 48 CM, move to alternative position, for 4850 reference design card you don't need to do anything.

4) Slot brackeks are very nice, better ventilation and let hot air out of the chassis.

So what tooked me so long to replace the heatsink?

Point 1 above was unexpected, but I have got a extra PCI-EX 1 slot on top of the PCI-16 (very close to NB), I tried to install my D2X there to free up two slots for the cooler, but not soundcard is too long and it's touching the little retention clips for Memory, took me quite a while to adjust the position of the clips so I can fit the soundcard in while the memory is not too loose (+/- 10 reboots as PC won't boot, keep on beeping).

Fan connector. So the power cable for the dual fan solution has two small plugs, one 4 pin you plug into the stock cooler power socket, a extra 3 pin plug you need to plug into the 4 pin molex converter they provided. BEWARE!!!! Make sure you plug the 3 pin into the socket which says 12V, I didn't see the little writing on the socket and just picked one which is 7V, and my PC won't boot when this is connected (took me a while to figure out as everytime I connect power and switch on, PC lights on for 0.XX seconds and then off, seems like typical short-circuit or some self protection thing from PSU).

There's still something wrong with my soundcard, volume is like really low. Uninstall driver/reinstall not working. Sorted

I hope this can provide some info to the future owners of this cooler. Feel free to ask me if you want to know something else that's not mentioned here.;)

I have the accelero cooler and it takes up 2 slots as well, I could not use my Xonar d2 pci either so I got the p5q since I only have PCI cards and they are the furthest slots free from the GPU on the motherboard.

Going to check the 4 pin stiffy drive power cable on my D2X is pluged in properly tomorrow. And I thought the Twin Turbo is better and thinner......

Are you sure you fitted the cooler correctly? I installed a Zalman VF900-CU on my 4850 and my temps dropped to 35 at idle and 55 at load.
 
Sounds nice.. wouldn't mind something like that for my 8800GTX.. but after all the recent woes I've had with Intel's lovely *cough* socket 775 carp I am not going to even consider fitting any new heatsinks for a few months :p

We can use the long voltage regulator heatsink came with AC TT on the square silver components, but those 8 small black ones are the one generating more heat and due the layout of these things you can only cover 4 of these with two VR heatsink. Maybe cut the VR heatsinks so it will fit? I will not take a chance to just leave it as it is.
 
The asus soundcard is not allowing air to circulate round the back, remove it and see how much the temps drop if any, use the onboard sound for now.

I had to live without my xonar for a few weeks too :/

I got a side fan blowing air onto the 4850/D2X and North Bridge.

I think the problem with higher temp than expected could also because the messy cable layout I have got. Maybe I need a new chassis.
 
Ran Furmark 1.4 for a while, stability test. 1280*1024 2AA, temp went up to 83. Fan speed remaind constant around 4XX-5XX RPM. Must be something wrong here now.
