I'm paying R100+ a month for a phone number that I've never used plus R350+ rand for ADSL. Is there any way to cancel the phone line but keep the ADSL? I'm basically paying for a service that I don't use.

nope as you need a phone line to use adsl

I would rather say you don't NEED a phone line (analogue voice service) rather just the copper in the ground. In most other countries where there's competition in the DSL arena, this type of service is avaliable, usually referred to as Naked ADSL.

Unfortunately since we have no competition, our incumbent can demand that you take voice service before they give you ADSL, so our hopes of all going naked are just a dream.

So basically, it is possible but Telkom just doesn't allow it?

I don't use my land line phone either. Was thinking the other day. What if one take one of those ADSL complete packages from one of the ISP's and then ask telkom to change your line to their wya-wya service. Will they notice?

They already have rules that ADSL is not available on prepaid lines. They'll get you either way.

you're right, no ADSL on prepaid. But why not use your landine to make calls. I added the Closer 3 plan and you get something like over a 1000 minutes a month and any call under an hour is free off peak times. I rather do that than get ripped off by the cell providers for calls.

My bill is always under R450, so for me getting the Closer Plan is silly. Then again I get 300 free* minutes a week using VOIP. Yup, Telkom included.

No way Telkom (at this point in time) will allow ADSL without 'voice line rental'. The line rental is their cash cow since you can have nothing from them without it.

There are WAY MORE voice lines without ADSL than there are with. Hence, when the yearly price review comes up, ADSL rental goes down by 18% (for example) & line rental goes up by 8%, more than making up for the ADSL "discount"
