We have a newly installed (second additional) ADSL line but have been experiencing something strange.

The ADSL router can Sync and we can even authenticate with a TelkomInternet account upon which we get a dynamically assigned IP. However we cannot send or receive data either by outbound browsing or inbound connections that are forwarded to behind the firewall.

(Yes all the correct router config has been done... read further down below)

The only thing that does work is the DNS resolution offered by the router by relaying DNS resolution requests to the Dynamically assign DNS servers. Thats all that gets through.

We cannot ping out, nor can the outside (internet) get ping replies.

Here comes the clincher... we unplug the ADSL line and plug our previously existing ADSL line into the same router and... voila! Everything works.
We haven't changed anything on the router. We can ping out, ping in, browse, establish inbound connections from the internet.

Does this sound famaliar to anyone ?

We have made contact with Telkom and are trying to resolve the issue, but it's hard to get the person on the other line onto the same page.

Maybe someone can suggest a good contact that can assist ?

Many thanks,
Jaans

Thanks for your quick reply...

I just went to double check (another person prepared the line).
And the response I got was
"Your ADSL Service request has already been processed."

So assume yes, it was verified.

I had similar probs when my line was upgraded. It was fixed by "refreshing/resetting" the port at the exchange

I have recently experienced the same thing with my line.
Worked fine for 10 days after install, then suddenly last Monday the data throughput became intermittent and then ceased all together.
Synching was still fine and the connection stayed stable - the data just couldn't get through.
Refreshing the port didn't help - the best we got at one stage was that I could browse as far as the Telkom page.
Then they started fiddling with Telkom teccies coming out as well as Mweb.
Think they have now also put me on a dud DSLAM port, as when synched at 4Mb/s the SNR as recorded by the Mweb router drops by up to 10dB (ouch) - which it didn't used to do.
Now at least getting data through on Mweb router synched at 3Mb/s - but interestingly, the Telkom guy left a router behind, which happily synchs and operates at the full 4Mb/s - completely stable and happy (longest period I had it on over the w/end was about 26hrs).
Mweb router updated with latest s/w didn't help.

When you said you unplugged the new line and plugged it into the router. Did you test the router on the same computer, or did you test it on a different one?

Are you running XP SP3 by any chance?

Hi teraside:
Same computer (which is a Windows 2003 R2 Server)

In fact we even tried a different router with same setup, it too works fine on the old line but with the new line no data is being routed.

Grrr!

You've got me stumped Jaans.

I guess it's safe to say that this is in fact a Telkom issue. After they send out a tech, report back if it's working, I doubt it's your configurations then.

Sorted

It was on Telkom's end afterall!

After the usual lengthy process of getting hold of Telkom, they requested that we reboot the router and leave it be and then re-do the whole verification process.

Had to wait for 40 minutes while they do tests or something. I couldn't get the operator to elaborate as I don't think he knew exactly. Anyhow it's resolved now!

Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions!

Much appreciated all!
