I used to get 25Mb per hour on my ISDN during callmore. But for the past 2 weeks I get about 8Mb. That can mean only one thing. TELKOM!!. The Port-shaping bastards. They have no right to determine what protocols I can use over the internet.

Come on Sentech, get Cape Town online before I go Tear some Telkom buildings down[}:)]. Sentech we need you.

Yep. and other programs too. Only thing running at 64k is browser downloads

hmmm, at least you can download using bit torrent. I can't anymore. sad!! so I download my new smallville,charmed and angel through dcc (from mirc fserv), Does "TELKOM!!. The Port-shaping bastards" allow you to download at maximum speeds thru mirc?

8 MB/hour, that's awful, that's what I get on my old 28.8 modem.
 
Its the other way round for Sentech. Bittorrent works reasonably ok for now but DCC / IRC transfers suck and are probably prioritised. So if you want something off IRC you gonna have to wait. I have only managed to get dialup speeds on IRC and the speeds are nowhere near constant.
 
prioritization just sucks, who are they to tell us what ports we can use and what we can't. Surely there must be some way to take them to court and get rid of this. I don't see them doing this overseas

NO, nowhere else do they do it why? because they want their countries to prosper and grow and fall on par with the rest of the developed world.

Fantasy is what people want, reality is what they need.

It remains to be seen whether Sentech may also do the same thing.

p2p apps such as bittorrent put a helluva strain on a network if they are abused. I'm pretty sure if Sentech feel it's neccessary to do port shaping, they will, but so long as it's in a sensible manner, that's fine.

If they can prioritise traffic (they probably do already), then everyone will be happy.

Secondly, unless you are using SAIX as your ISP for your ISDN it is impossible for telkom to do port shaping on that line !@!@!
 
Telkom doesn't excactly prioritize a specific port but instead packet types. I recon they use packateer - a program that dynamicaly regognize packet types regardless of what port they run on.

This doesnt only happen in SA, i've seen a few ISP's overseas doing it aswell(especialy varsities).

I hate the fact thow that they are prioritizing the systems we use. The main reason why broadband is so popular is downloads i mean dont they understand that? Aww well, hopefully telescum will come right and Sentech will stay true :p

in refrence to the Kazaa topic, a pactaeer examines the packets on a layer 7, so it does not matter what port it is using, it will still catch it, so I doubt if Telkom are using Packateers but more likley OEM software with the DSLAMs

I don't think that is the case. As proof take Kazaa lite. With the default port settings it crawls, but change the port to 21 or 80 and the download speed increases quite decently.
 
I dont care if DCC uses static or dynamic ports. All I care about is that ii is dead slow. If theres a way to speed it up please let me know. Or if you can consistently attain 0.8 x package speed (for me thats about 12KB/sec) then I cant blaim the 10Mbps servers I have tried connecting to...
