Tomorrow I am sending an email to Telkom Internet (My ISP) and demanding the ability to change my username and password to whatever I want in line with their response.
PS
Hi RPM.
Is there some reference I can use in my email like complaint number etc.
Thanks
Of course I don't look busy.....I did it right the first time.

Hi there.
Username : <Username removed>
Something that was a concern of mine for a while now is the fact that I do not have the ability to change my password on my account. I have the daily email notification turned on as to enable me to verify asap (in fact one day too late) that the usage on my account is not correct if ever that situation would arise. It has however now come to my attention through the media the following response.
Mr. XXX complained that he and his service provider have been experiencing innumerable problems from the Telkom ADSL service. He alleges that his service provider has not been able to download files via email and that Telkom could not offer an explanation or solution. It was only through the service provider’s constant nagging of Telkom that he was informed that he had exceeded that 3 Gig cap. The complainant alleges that his service provider then requested to have log from Telkom to investigate why he had exceeded the cap and found out that he was not responsible for exceeding the limit. The complainant alleges that his service provider found out that every Sunday huge downloads were made from his account. Telkom staff has not been of assistance.
Telkom response:
Telkom can not and will not take accountability for the user’s user name and password. Between the user and the ISP, the user passwords need to change on a regular basis to ensure that their personal computers are not infected with Trojans, as this can be used to discover user passwords.
From this response I see that Telkom will not and can not take responsibilty for username and password protection. I therefore request the ability to change my password at will as soon as possible. If I have failed to notice this ability anywhere in your correspondence I humbly apologise.
Your response in this regard is eagerly awaited.
Thanks

hehehe
I see someone's stirring at a hornets nest.
The part I love is that when I phone to change my password I am supposed to trust the techie to NOT write down the password .... uhm ... sorry but I DO NOT TRUST a techie - I am one after all [8D][8D][8D][8D]

Hi guys
There is definitely a great deal to be desired when it comes to the facilities and the protocol used to change a username/password. One of the basic rules of security is that nobody without proper authorization should be able to access your username/password. It is encouraging to see that you guys don’t just accept these rather inadequate responses from Telkom regarding the ADSL ICASA Complaints. Enough action from ADSL users will certain speed up the process of change.
Myrrdin: The specific complaint number is CA/G082/03. I unfortunately don’t have the Telkom number for this complaint but have it for some of the others…just ask :-)

That's a really retarded security policy; I mean heck, why don't you just read your PIN out to the teller at the bank the next time you get a card?
