Policy on forum ?

Hi,

I think we should all agree on a policy for this forum, to keep all happy as some people say advertising is not allowed, however if it can help then why not ? what are you feelings and RPM, as this is your site, how do you feel about it ?

/me *slaps* all posters going off at a tangent - the "When and Why?" of this forum:

"MyADSL was formed in 2003 to serve as a source of information and a place where broadband users can discuss issues openly and share information. In addition to serving its basic function MyADSL will work with relevant organizations to try and improve the broadband Internet services in South Africa. We are therefore a true South African Broadband Users Group."
 
It follows that if the advertising of services can reasonably be seen as falling within this definition, then it would be acceptable, the way I see it. Emphasis must, however, be placed on the "to try and improve the broadband Internet services" aspect - there is no way that advertising to promote your profits would be acceptable. After all, this is a no-charge forum...
 
If the advertising is relevant to a question asked, is it allowed or should it be provided by a neutral third party ?

I would love to answer questions regarding MyWireless, but if some ask where to buy it from etc ; what do I say ?

For now I am happy to answer question and will try not to advertise as I am a newbie on your forum.
 
I do feel its nice for people to know there are alternate places to go for whatever their needs are but blatant advertising especially on someone else's topic is a big no no.

Having said that, maybe RPM should open a Sticky and Locked topic to where different companies/individuals offer services that contribute towards MyWireless/ADSL which is what this forum is all about.
Should anyone wish to advertise in that topic, they inturn email RPM and if he feels its legit, adds it to the topic.

However, these companies/individuals will be asked questions elsewhere in the forum which is cool, but inturn the answers should be precise and to the point with no long "advertising" blab attached.

These companies/individuals should also make a fair number of advisory contributions to the forum and if they dont, delete their advert from the Sticky,Locked topic.

Hi ProASM and others

I have been giving this idea some thought and agree that it is necessary to inform people about services. While we do it we might as well do it well :) I would therefore like to ask what you guys would like to see when a service is advertised, like ‘what is offered’, ‘price (all inclusive)’, etc. If anybody advertises and does not offer exactly what the promise or give bad service I can simply take them out. This way members will be assured that the companies listed on MyADSL is trustworthy (or at least appear to be).

Any ideas?

That sounds like a very reasonable policy. I you have everything you need them don't check out the advertising. Like when you buy the newspaper, it is your choice to chuck out all the crap stuffed inside or to read it.

Yup - concur fully. Content must include (1) Definition of Service Offering (2) Pricing (3) Gauarantee/Warranty/Terms & Conditions of Purchase/Service (4) <i>Domicilium</i> (5) Full Contact Detail.

Trouble is, all of the above would be a helluva lot - prefer links to be posted, to keep the forum clean. Advertising should perhaps therefore be constrained to nothing more than links...
 
How about this,
Create a sticky thread called Serices Offered

In there, put in all places,like fastcom and sentech ;) nowire and all the other places that do something relavant to this forum.
Then they can update those and modify them.

To me this is informative, because I can see what services is available, and not always having to ask.

And ofcourse, I would find it fair if they answer when asked a question..


So kinda like a ... speak when spoken to situation.

I think you have made a valuable point. In order to avoid anybody simply publishing their service never to be seen again (like free ads) they should be available to answer service related questions in a forum. And as you say…only speak when spoken to :-) They will get free exposure while members know about services from ‘respectable’ MyADSL members. Idyllic but worth a try…

Create the thread ...... It's a brave new world, there is bound to be growing pains.

I am glad to offer my products / services and in return will accept the flack that I get.
 
I agree with ProASM and TX - create a sticky but use moderator's discretion for the contents...I mean surely one should only be able to post an advert if they have say 50 posts and those posts are deemed constructive and not spam...

Also the moment anyone starts doing crap like pasting pamphlet text into topics, those people should be bounced from the forum and their advert removed - see this topic for an example of someone that should get bounced (*cough* --SAwireless-- *cough*) [:(!]:

Don't want to state the obvious but...

People have been able to advertise unobtrusively all along. Next to each member's nick, is a link to his homepage if anyone wishes to go there, it's part of you're profile.

I personally Will go check out someone's homepage if I get a sense the person is saying and offering something constructive, and have done so often since I discovered this forum.

Normally the saying goes... Actions speak louder than words.
In the case of a forum... Posts speak louder than advertising.

But consolidating everything in one place could also be done, lets just not burden RPM unnecessarily with secondary objectives...
unless a 'donation' is made to MyADSL for referals from this site, which could go to furthering our cause.[:p]

A simple forum group for everything business related, obviously called "classifieds"
A place for people to trade whatever they wish with basic rules of conduct.

Boy, do I wish we as agents could have web sites already. We're waiting for confirmation from sentech. Any agent that already has a web site up is NOT allowed to do so according to sources at Nowire.

Anyone heard anything different? Dean Henstock (you going to reply to my emails, ever?), you have advertising up - I don't mean to be confrontational, but is that authorised? Under who do you fall? Have you been told something different to us?

The story I have is that no advertising until sentech officially announces it's partners. Which it's taking it's sweet time doing.

RPM looks like i opend a can of worms here, my appologies.

From administrative point of vew it will generate overhead to maintain such section, only valuable alternative is to make such sections self suficient by means of trust worthy volountiers, or chardge for such service offerd.

But with this last post it seems that ther is soem legal implications as far as disclosure of information regarding Sentech's partners and services. So One should get advice from Senteceh, if it would be payed service. anything done for profit can be chalanged in court for losses and damages.

Exactly the issue behind my previous posting on this topic, hence the suggestion of specific publishing of things like Terms and Conditions and <i>Domicilium</i>. Methinks it should be a chargeable service to remunerate the administrator. /aside - DBLD, are you and DEAN_HENSTOCK the same peep?
