Halo was a great game for Microsoft; it single-handedly sold the original Xbox and marked the beginning of a great franchise for the console.

It made Xbox Live popular and convinced Microsoft to acquire the studio which, until then, developed games for Macintosh. It became known as the Xbox's best game, with the sequel breaking all sales records at that time, enjoying a huge amount of popularity with the fans, and earning them the nickname “Halo Nation”. The third installment of the game and the conclusion of Master Chief's trilogy of adventures brought overwhelming success, having made 170 million dollars in the first 24 hours. Not only did it sell well but it also gave the Xbox 360 the push it needed in sales and made it the most popular console at that time.

It was a great franchise for Microsoft and their console, but after Halo 3 and the departure of Bungie Studios, things weren't looking so good. But Microsoft acted quickly and acquired all the intellectual rights to the Halo universe and is currently developing several other projects based on them. Microsoft's Phil Spencer recently declared that “There are more than two or three teams building Halo games right now, some of them we will own, some of them we won't”.

The projects mentioned are undoubtedly the confirmed Halo Wars, which is set to appear at the beginning of the next year, and the Halo Chronicles, which is currently developed by Peter Jackson's studio. Other rumored projects which are set to be linked to the Halo universe are one yet unnamed game under development by Bungie Studios and the presumed Halo 4 title, which will be launched with Microsoft's next console.

All these projects combined with several Hollywood producers that have manifested an interest in a possible Halo-based movie will definitely make sure that this game is still part of our lives for the next few years. Who knows, maybe it will end up like Mario for Nintendo, let's just hope that the games under development will live up to the franchise's reputation.

Seems like Ms is already developing a launch titles for it's next console !

Had a blast with my mates playing Halo 3 split screen over the weekend.

As long as one of those games is Halo 4, Im happy.

Just a question: personally i hated Halo 3, and it seems a large part of the 360 community feels the same way. Wouldn't it make more sense for MS to focus rather on ie Gears 3 for the 720 launch? That's a game with much more universal acclaim, both from critics and players (most important), it was and still is IMO the best game on the 360. I know Halo sells, but with the same marketing campaign, so would a pile of dried-up donkey turds.

I read somewhere the movie will be based off the novel "The Fall of Reach"

/me crosses fingers and toes hoping its true. Epic book :D

@ Kerrrang!

I loved Halo3. It was a bit short... Co-op'd with a mate in a night on Heroic, but fun :)

+1
Halo 3 = Overhyped and Underwhelmed

Halo was not that bad but after playing COD4, Halo made me want to hurl due to the physics...or should I say, the lack thereof...

Because people are sheep and don't know what they're looking at.

Contrary to what an outspoken few think, Halo 3 is not actually a bad game. It goes in the same bucket as MGS4 - It's the end of a solid Franchise, and as such is a refined game, but it doesn't bring anything amazingly new to the gameplay, just phenomenal balance. Likewise the single player is the closure of a story which comes out a bit thin if you haven't played the first two.

But on the ground in a multiplayer match it can be awesome. Halo 3 to a large degree has the weight of the MLB and other gaming leagues around it's neck as the de facto game, they can't just throw out the core gameplay.

The fact that it's the game of choice for 6 million players and even as a console exclusive is the second most played console game online speaks volumes.

Yet i still think that without M$'s huge marketing campaign, it wouldnt be nearly as successful. Hell, and if i'm not mistaken even Eurogamer fell for the hype-and-marketing-train, subsequently lowering their score from an 8 to a 6.

Without Sony/Konami's big marketing campaign MGS4 would just be another niche yawnfest.

That's the industry.
Thanks for the Eurogamer pointer - they actually extol Halo 3 more in their retrospective:

Look at Halo 3 too closely, and it doesn't look too different from what came before. Take in the whole picture at once, and it's nothing short of breathtaking.

Call of Duty 4 stole much of Halo 3's thunder and critical acclaim at the end of last year, and it's certainly an extremely well-crafted and overwhelmingly powerful experience. But beneath its bluster it's all show, a rudimentary assemblage of the oldest tricks in the book: heavy scripting, respawning enemies, crude event triggers. You don't have to push far past the boundaries of its tightly controlled corridor of fun to see the wizard pulling the wires.

Halo 3, on the other hand, is truly emergent, a game where terrific action storytelling occurs organically from the interaction of the player, multiple AI elements (interacting with each other), and the precarious-but-perfect balance of its weapon, vehicle and enemy designs.

In other words Kerrrang, if you're going to make **** up, you better check your sources first.

That's why I said "if i'm not mistaken", that whole sentence being the operative word. I unfortunately can't check everything from work as 95% of all sites related to gaming are blocked.

So in other words, before flinging **** around, make sure you read the post properly.

I have nothing against Halo 3, the story is quite interesting, the game is marketed as the end of trilogy (it always has been) and my comments are stemming from mostly a single player perspective.
The game shines in the MP arena via online or linked.

That's your easy way out for being sloppy.

Come on, I dare you to say "Sorry I was wrong, Halo 3 isn't actually all that bad" ;)

I expected so much with all the hype surrounding its release.

I seriously didnt enjoy this game!!! Played about halfway through and gave up on it. Maybe I should give the multiplayer a try.

But based on what Ive seen and if theres more to come... Good Lord save us!!!

lol, NEVER! Honestly, Halo 3 sucked balls. Gears was awesome from start to finish. And that's the point i was trying to make. How many Xbox gamers will actually put Halo above Gears in their "fav game" or "most influential" list? I'm betting the scales will tip hugely in favour of Gears.
