Tshabalala-Msimang said research and development in this area was important for "improving accessibility to health care through the production of researched and standardised medicinal products".

It would serve the "needs of our people in addressing the use of traditional medicines in infectious diseases, chronic illnesses and preventative care", she said.

Tshabalala-Msimang said much of the research conducted in South Africa so far had not focused on the medicinal value of the "whole plant" but rather on "isolated extracts of plants".

"It is possible then that potentially useful molecules must have been missed in this way...

"As a result, despite our wealth in both plant and cultural diversity, South Africa has been unable to leverage this to create a vibrant biotechnological and pharmaceutical base," she said.

and for all the years that africans have been using muti and like the news of the other day when 13 people died from traditional muti cr@p the only good traditional meds have been some spliff and that manto is from "isolated extracts of plants"

she is going to kill half the population before she quits/gets fired or tries here own concoctions.

Yes because the rest of the plant may have no effect or additional unwanted side-effects with no additional benefits. What a complete whackjob she is!

She has not been reappointed.New minister of healty is Barbra Hogan. And if I spelt the name wrong so be it.

Correct. Barbara Hogan was actually kicked out of the Health dept. by Manto "Dr Beetroot" Tshabalala-Msimang because she supported the TAC and a new way of tackling the AIDS crisis.

I think Hogan will probably be made Deputy Minister of Health next year and the former Deputy, Madlala-Routledge, will be made Minister. The only reason she couldn't be appointed now is because she quit as an MP when Mbeki fired her.

Hopefully some good news for our Health system and the anti-HIV war.

Cape Town - South Africa's new president has moved the much-criticised health minister away from the Aids portfolio.

President Kgalema Motlanthe reassigned Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, making her a minister in the presidency. She will be a close adviser but will not hold specific responsibilities.

Tshabalala-Msimang has long been accused of frustrating the anti-Aids drive in a country with the highest number of infected people in the world.

She made plain her mistrust of antiretroviral medicines, espousing the value of lemons, garlic, olive oil and beetroot.

I-Net Bridge reported that the president did not say exactly what her duties will be, but the previous minister, Essop Pahad, was in charge of the government information service, and responsible for the affairs of women, youth and people with disabilities

OMG!! she is going to experiment on the youth and aged now, our own dr. Mengele

Dr. Josef Mengele (March 16, 1911– February 7, 1979) was a German SS officer and a physician in the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. He gained notoriety for being one of the SS physicians who supervised the selection of arriving transports of prisoners, determining who was to be killed and who was to become a forced laborer, and for performing human experiments on camp inmates, amongst whom Mengele was known as the Angel of Death.
