“Frankly I am glad to see him gone,”

The former president said that he had almost come to blows with Mbeki in the presence of former Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, then the world’s wealthiest man, when Mbeki rejected funds for anti-retrovirals and accused white people of using anti-retrovirals to harm black people.

Speechless!!!!

Zachie Achmat (TAC)
TAC leader Zackie Achmat said it was sad that it took so long for the ANC to recall Mbeki. He said Mbeki’s failure to act promptly resulted in millions of premature Aids-related deaths.

“We think the (former) president (Mbeki) has done enormous damage to our society.… Since he came into power, at least two million people have died prematurely ,” said Achmat.

Makes you wonder why he met them in the first place ?! --- probably just to vent his blatant racism

Everyone has their weak points and sadly Mbeki's was that he tried so hard to be so intellectual about stuff. If your people are dying, give them medicine, don't debate their economic state and if they are poor or not. If your people are unemployed, make it priority number one, yes looking good to the world and having a good credit rating and solving the continents problems is all nice and stuff but it's not going to employ your people. He was so bloody stubborn.

Although Zuma's boys and girls aren't perfect themselves at least they seem to understand what grassroots people need. The devil is in the detail though, lets just hope they work it out as quickly and as logically as possible.

ROFL

Jimmy Carter. Wow perhaps after his Mugabe lovefest he's actually learnt something. I wonder if he has a problem with Obama considering his mentor claims the U.S government is spreading aids among blacks in the U.S. Probably not :o

Mbekis stance on HIV and anti-retrovirals was based purely and solely on finances. He new as well as anyone that anti-retrovirals would save the lives of 100's of thousands of unborn children but who would look after these children once their infected parents died from full blown AIDS? The state yes and therein lies the dilemma... It was a business decision pure and simple, took major balls to take that stance as clearly and rightfully it was not a popular decision..

I reckon Mbeki has been grossly under estimated by South Africans. He's been criticized for never being in the country but he's been out trying to sell the country abroad, perhaps he understands the importance of foreign investment and he has been successful in selling the country to off shore investors.

He's been widely criticized for his diplomatic stance on Zim but has any other stance worked? Does anyone think that a dictator such as Mugabe is reachable on any level other than a diplomatic one? That ape is so thick skinned and hell bent on raping and destroying Zim that nothing the West could do would deter him. At least there is an open door of communication between Mbeki and Bob so as far as I'm concerned Mbeki has been more successful than any one else of this planets illustrious leaders...

Mbeki's been criticise for lack of service delivery for the poor. If anyone here beliefs Zuma or the current president will be more successful they living in a dream world, tough times are here to stay, we all have to earn our keep, not this country or any country can sustain a 25% unemployment rate neither can this or any other country adopt an open door policy to its neighbours while keeping its local population above the bread line. Just not sustainable..

we are talking about the same president who said HIV does not cause AIDS, right? i dont think it was a financial decision.

So you reckon he would have been better off by saying," the state cannot afford to look after a million aids orphans so for now no anti-retrovirals will be given to pregnant mothers infected with HIV...''. Believe me Thabo and everyone on his staff knew/knows that HIV causes AIDS but politically they believed it would do less damage to him if they spun a different tune...

yes. (even if the problem REALLY was a financial one). it is better to come clean IMO. the drivel they spun about HIV and AIDS not being related did a helluva lot more damage than just saying "there's no money at present" - which is a TERRIBLE excuse anyhow.

that i do not believe.
he went on ranting for a good long time (especially in his 1st term being president) questioning the link between HIV and AIDS. poverty and malnutrition is a b1tch in africa - it causes AIDS here.

He's been criticized for never being in the country but he's been out trying to sell the country abroad, perhaps he understands the importance of foreign investment and he has been successful in selling the country to off shore investors.

Then why didn't he do something about one of the biggest factors that stifle foreign investors and a means to bring foreign income into the country by locals - cost of communications in SA?

This reasoning makes no sense, since the parents on ARV's would have survived for a good 20-30 years... they would not have died and left orphans to be supported by the state.

AND why then did Mbeki support and fund the aids denialists cure of vitamins and garlic?

Absolute stupidity and paranoia, thats why!

I think you're missing the part in the link above where Mbeki "rejected funds for anti-retrovirals". If the problem was a financial one, why not just accept the fcking money!

obviously, Mbeki knows what we commoners dont know or dont have information about.

Yes. Maybe he even knows that he could rightfully be dragged in front of a human rights tribunal in The Hague for crimes against humanity for failing to act against AIDS.

thats laughable bru.:D

So explain why. This dude had access to 20 years of irrefutable scientifically proven evidence linking HIV to AIDS and what does he do? He decides to pull the race card calling it a great white conspiracy to get rid of the blacks. He then goes even further and refuses millions of dollars in aid that gets offered to him to combat AIDS.

In the meantime millions of his own countrymen are dying due to lack of proper treatment. The minister of heath, that he appointed himself, then states for the record that the best cure for AIDS is beetroot and garlic.

Now, I dunno, but who else do you want to blame for the deaths of vast numbers of people that died as a result of this man's blank refusal to accept scientific fact and who tolerated a health minister that wanted to treat the condition with beetroot? Sorry, bud, but in my book this man is guilty of crimes against humanity.

Exactly.
Manto has also made her position very clear, favouring the african potato and such.
Whats worse is she is in an even more powerful position now, this, a person who also thinks ARV's are a way for the white people to harm black people.

The native intelligence never ceases to amaze.

Mbeki's role in the arms deal must count as one of his greatest ****-ups.

To true!!!!!

Millions need houses but lets spend billions on weapons and complain that we don't have enough money for social upliftment.

Madness I tell you.

The simplest answer is the correct one: mbeki is an incompetent idiot.

Him being tossed out of government is at least 4 years overdue. Unfortunately he will probably just be replaced by another incompetent idiot.

Yes, and so it will go on for the next 100+ years, one buffoon replaced by another while people go hungry and others die of AIDS.

Jimmy Carter was a crap president in many ways, but he had a lot of empathy with people, and has done fantastic things for human rights, civil rights, and international relations. Hell, he even got a Nobel Prize for it.

(And yes, he seems to have been one of those rare people to be able to change his mind when he becomes further informed on things).
