As reported a week ago, Nokia today announched their self admitted stab at the iPhone.

While most iPhone users swear high and low that UI (User Interface) is the most important thing for them, most other people put the features you can interact with though the UI higher on the list of priorities. That is where the 5800 hits a home run. Have a look at the impressive feature set : http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_5800_xpressmusic_-2537.php (almost every feature is a 1 up on the iPhone).

Plus, the cherry on top, the UI is pretty damn amazing and runs on top of Symbian 9.4 with dual ARM 11 369Mhz CPUs (which are know to make a killing as seen in the N82).

So for all those folks looking to upgrade to a touchscreen phone by year end but have basic requirements like a full set of messaging options, a decent camera with auto focus and of course working bluetooth with A2DP (stuff you don't get in the iPhone), fear not - the Nokia 5800 is coming for you :p.
 
Yes that's all very well and good.... But you still won't have an iPhone.
 
Sadly, they decided to use a resistive rather than the capacitative touch screen, which means things like multi-tap recognition will not work. Also, it is a stylus based phone, which is a bit dated these days.

Apple can increase the clock with a future update, they have done this before.

When you have a 640x360 pixel screen I'd say that is minor issue to live by.

Remember, no matter how slick your UI is the key is still what you are interfacing with. In case of the iPhone - not much really. With this phone, I'd day you are interacting with a whole lot more.

Also bear in mind that the 5800 is a midrange touchscreen solution. Nokia is still working on an upmarket touchscreen product and I expect it to be in the 7xxx fashion range or perhaps even the 8xxx style range.

It's a mobile it needs to conserve energy, dual CPUs in a phone is just not smart.

From what we can tell, it looks like the iPhone's got a 620MHz ARM chip running under the hood. Specifics:
ARM1176JZF chip with TrustZone (enables trusted computing environment for media, apps, network, OS, etc. -- very bad for hackers)
Can vary in clock speed up to 700MHz or more, depending on implementation (thanks, Nigma)
ARM Intelligent Energy Manager (claimed to reduce power consumption 25-50% in portables)
16K / 16K cache
Features vector floating point coprocessor ("for embedded 3D-graphics")
ARM Jazelle enabled for embedded Java execution (hmm...)
SIMD, high perf integer CPU (8-stage pipeline, 675 Dhrystone, 2.1 MIPS)
0.45 mW/MHz power draw (with cache)
Whatever it is Apple's got that thing doing, they're doing it right. Thus far our iPhone battery life tests have far exceeded expectations (more on that soon).

The ARM range of processors are very light on power consumption. I guess it all comes down to how you implement it. The Finnish clearly know how to do that while the Americans still need to figure that part out, but right now they are to dazzled with the glitz and glamor of a the UI...

The user interface is simply an interface by which the user interacts with the phone. So you ask what is more than that, well, in an iPhone - not much really. In the 5800 you can use the user interface on all sort of advanced features like:
*Copy and paste text anywhere in the OS
*A messaging client that can MMS and forward SMS messages.
*Decent camera with 3.2megapixels and a Tessar auto focus lens.
*Ability to record DVD quality videos
*Fully fledged bluetooth functionality including A2DP
*Sending music and content to any other device without iTunes.
*Turn by Turn voice navigation with industry leading GPS software
*Listening to FM radio with station identified by RDS
*Viewing office documents on the fly
*Operation via voice commands, it is liking talking to person that can hear you instead of using hand gestures as with the deaf
*Turn predictive text on or off without having to resort to 3rd party hacks
*Doing proper multitasking on the most secure mobile platform around
*A whole range of other things I cannot think of now that simple work out of the box with no need for 3rd party apps
*Even more things I cannot mention because of the vast range of Sybmain and Java 3rd party apps freely available on the internet

So you see - while a user interface is nice, it helps you squat-all if the features you are interacting with are not present or not up to standard. Keep in mind the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a mid-range device, a high end model will follow and I expect WVGA screen res and 8mp camera at least.

Did I mention the Nokia is lighter than the iPhone ?

A user interface is a subjective thing. Symbian's interface is tried and tested and it has stood the test of time. These days it is very snappy and it does have a lot of eye candy that most serious users just turn off.

absolutely and undisputedly agreed!

*also you can get it for just about a quarter of the price of an iPhone

*with free music downloads for a year + you get to kep the music even after the year :)

*mobile review says the screen is on par with the iPhone, and the audio quality may even be better.
 
Someone botched up the CPU specs.
The 5800XM Tube uses the single Freescale I.MX31 369mhz CPU, the same CPU seen in N81, N78, N79 and N85. The CPU in N82 is a Texas Instruments OMAP2420 dual CPU at 332mhz With a PowerVR MBX2 3D Hardware Graphics Accelerator, this CPU is seen in N93, N93i, N95, N95-8gb, N82 and E90. That CPU seems to be have been abandond by NOKIA probably because its GPU could only do upto VGA 30FPS video although in terms of gaming its still the best GPU found in a phone. The Freescale CPU is a lot faster at everything except hardcore 3D gaming which is not necessary because it can handle Ngage and most other 3D Symbian games just fine. NOKIA are a lot like BMW, they dont need a lot of BHP to beat the competition, they implement everything well and make sure they get the best out of what they have without wasting a lot of energy, BMW call it Dynamic Efficiency, NOKIA call it On-Demand Paging. :-) the iPhone may have a 412mhz CPU that can do up to 620mhz but The NOKIA can do everything the iPhone can x10 times and more on top of that just as fast. By the way the Freescale CPU in the NOKIAs can do upto 500mhz but was also underclocked to 369mhz by NOKIA since Symbian is not that power hungry. :-)
 
I will concede to this - the iPhone has a damn good user interface and Nokia is not there quite just yet. But at least they took notice and the 5800 is a good start. Also, as mentioned, the 5800 is in the 5xxx range which is fairly midrange. I expect a much better touchscreen phone from Nokia in the 7xxx fashion range or perhaps even under the N-Series segment and with that one I think they will have a user interface that competes stronger with the iPhone.
 
My 2 pennie's worth. Could not wait anymore for the Iphone , so I got myself a HTC diamond. That was 5 weeks ago. When they launch the Iphone I bought the 8gig model. After using it for a week plus I am back with the diamond. The Iphone give you the feeling of a cheap toy comparing to the HTC. Hats of to their marketing team. They are brilliant to bulls... the world believing its a great phone
