I have read on various websites and in books that you should never pay the asking price when it comes to buying a used car because that is the maximum price that the dealership hopes to get.
So i was wondering just how big of a "discount" can you negotiate for a used car?
Have any of you had any success stories when it comes to negotiating for a discount?
Just generally speaking how much less should you be paying?

hard to say. depends on the vehicle and how long the dealer has had it in stock.

I usually push for at least 3%, But in the current market, 5% is reasonable. I'm loving the fact that car dealers are sufferring. Push them more. Play hardball. Offer much less and see if they bite. What's the worst that can happen? It's not like they won't sell it to you at all if you offer to low.

The pressure is on for everyone in the auto industry. Sales guys earn commission on sales, so they need sales. Dealers are struggling with excess stock and low sales volumes - so they are more inclined to let vehicles go for less.

In this market, as the buyer, you're on top. Enjoy it while it lasts.

depends the dealers markup on used i usually not set it all depends on what he/she got the car for ... what car is it ... im sure i can you some sort of indication what the dealer might have paid for it ...

hehe i plan to. I'm just not that good when it comes to negotiating:o
5% whould be great!

I always go 10% below the price they're asking for and slowly work up from there. Managed to get a dealer to agree on an 8% discount last week, just a pity I'm gonna turn down his offer coz I got a better deal from someone else.

My boss seems to think that dealerships get a "kick-back" from financial institutions for referring buyers to a certain financial company.

His advice is usually to tell the sales person that you know that his/her dealership receives a "kick-back" and if they are not willing to reduce the price by the "kick-back" amount you will purchase elsewhere.

My boss is pretty good at negotiating on pretty much any deal:).

It must be rubbing off on me - I managed to negotiate a 15% discount on a consignment of parts for our factory:D.

Edit: Be firm but polite;).

the dealer most prob paid R75k odd for the car assuming the mileage is still decent like 50 000km ... what are they selling it for?

various prices. Ranging from 90k to 110 k depending on mileage and year. But not many are below 100k.
