After all the reception problems with Virgin since it started I have heard from a few people that Virgin's GPRS/EDGE speeds and reception have improved. I am considering a prepaid Virgin Simcard purely for the 50c/MB :) data fee which is much cheaper than other networks. Would this be worthwhile???

I dont use my personal phone for many phonecalls as I have a work phone that I use for that so this would be 90% used for data purposes. Yea Virgin's service is terrible but I wont be on a contract so I wont be selling my soul.

I would suggest Vodacom. They have various prepaid data bundles; if you buy a 500MB data bundle you would pay 38c per 1MB. Also I don’t think Virgin has 3G:eek:.

Well with voda you would have to spend quite a bit to get a rate that is cheaper then virgin so are you honestly going to use 500mb?

I use about 150MB/month on my phone so vodacom doesnt work out cheaper. Does Virgin not have 3G?

Virgin is dial-up, trust me and every ex-user!
And trying to connect randomly at any given time is like playing the national lottery.
The speed is terrible and even to check your email is a make yourself-a-cup-of-tea-first chore!
My uncle loves everything cheap, and even he left Virgin!

This is overexageration, innacuate and of no use to anyone.

I use it everyday, and have done so for the last .... 2years i think. I check my email 50 times a day. I surf, i have a (crap) website, i just started blogging, and i'm on the internet alot. It has its moments, where you need to disconnect and reconnect, but generally its fine.

Do you guys use a normal cellphone and connect via bluetooth, or usb.

Or is a data card better?

Thinking of using VM for mobile internet (ADSL @Home)

I was wondering if Wireless (higher latency) would be even slower over another wireless (bluetooth) connection??

I have a bluetooth/EDGE phone, + laptop, so VM could potentially be awesome!

Boodles, I agree, I use Virgin on a prepaid card on an e220 modem. I use it at work when my firewall blocks certain sites (rapidshare, car sites etc) and at home when there is bad weather (lightning storm) and can't complain - never have issues in fact I get better connection via VM edge than VC's so called 3G (I live in a dead spot for 3g reception - VC gprs is non existent.

The question of does Virgin have 3G is a bit puzzling coz I was in Jo'burg a couple of weeks back and I got a full speed 3G coverage using my Virgin sim but when I am home around White River the best you can get is EDGE.
