Damn Damn Damn - No LOS

So my cables cut for the 4th time in as many weeks - the first 3 times telkom did quick cable repairs, but after the 4th they gave up.
Desperately requiring internet I tried 3G, which is rubbish, so ended up yesterday with Neotel lite, which works ok, a tad slow, but at least it works.
Then out of the blue, 3 vehicles rock up today, they have come to install wimax on behalf of Telkom - 3 hours later and ffs, no LOS anywhere....damn damn damn:mad:.
This sucks big time, so they said they will be back with senior techies in a few days to check if booster antenna or if maybe higher pole will work, but me thinks I'm screwed, this really sucks!!!!
 
That is my worst nightmare. I am holding thumbs and crossing my toes that when Telkom rocks up at my place that I have LOS.
 
:/ Sorry to hear man...but I must say that is decent of Telkom to try a booster, lets hope they come right. Good luck! :)
 
Its not Telkom who are doing the wimax installation, its a private sub-contractor, so maybe there is hope!

They said they will be back, surely I can get one of these tall lightning rods and have the antenna on top?

Maybe I should also hire a chainsaw and remove all the stoopid trees!

I'm sure in Greenstone you should be in LOS of Kelvin?
 
LOL...tbh the thought of chopping down all the trees in my area did cross my mind a few times...

I'm not sure if Telkom does sub-contract WiMax, but it seems as though their systems are not intergrated. Does someone perhaps know if WiMax is a separate division or fully outsourced?

In Greenstone you should have LOS...that is near my place and I noticed two towers...one is very close! But you should probably see both imo.

I stay on the side of Greenstone Hill that looks east. So from my unit I can see Modderfontein, Sebenza, Edenglen and Thornhill. I was told they have 4 towers covering the area but that depends on if there is anything blocking my LOS. Do you know what the company name is that did/tried your install?

Yip, they were not Telkom employees, the dude gave me the full breakdown of how they operate and the name of the company was on their cars, can't recall, so was so busy stressing about the LOS I went blank on everything else...

Still, I can't believe how efficient Telkom have been in sorting out the cable theft and now I'm screwed cause of LOS...
 
Maybe I got the cat by the wrong end, but isn't one of the primary attractions of WiMax the fact that it operates in a NLOS (non-line of sight) environment?? Or do Telkom deploy a version that is only LOS?
 
Not 100% sure about other WiMax providers but I was under the impression that one should be the same as any other. Telkom WiMax needs some LOS to transmit and receive data.

Been in the coverage area is not good enough...
 
Depends on where in GH - Isando is also possible!

Where are you - the story of a longer pole does not sound right - there is a standard pole used or installations and there are other restraints.

The story of a booster also does not sound right :rolleyes:

Yeh they had the standard pole with them, but they said if they can't get a signal (which they didn't) they will come back in a few days with a senior technician, as they are only authorised to do standard installations and if they hit a glitch then they get a senior techie over to check if a solution can be found - or maybe he was just yanking my chain - what do I know?
 
Where in GH exactly do you live - if you don't want to put your address here fine - give some a lat & Long

Something is not right here - how can bringing a senior technician help if there is no signal:confused:

Looking at a map there are two, possibly three towers to get signal from - how many towers did they survey??

As far as I know they tried all of them. I have two buildings on my property and they spent time on both with the antenna and little PDA thingy trying to locate a signal.
I think on one building they did get some faint signal, but I was bored watching them and they left before I could ask them exactly what was what.
I think I must be in a poor location because I can't even get iburst!:rolleyes:

Funny, i remember hearing the same thing, and kinda got the impression that it was operated by some kind of drone in the sky or satellite or something (crazy, i know, but thats what the nonsense i read at the time made me believe). But the reality is that wireless spectrum, at least anywhere between 700MHz-15Ghz that wimax apparently operates on (I cant find out anywhere exactly what our wimax spectrum is?) does definitely require LOS.
 
According to Telkom i'm also in a LOS area but during installation they were unable to get a signal. NO suggestions was offered and they left. All they said was: SORRY. :(

Telkom can't give me copper, Neotel can't give me anything and WiMAX doesn't work... now I'm using 3G with extremely poor latencies... bluh! :D

This whole line of site thing is very confusing:o According to what I can see, I don't have line of site and I have seen post here saying the same thing. Also aren't they supposed to look at alternatives to boost your signal if its to weak:confused:
