Energy saving laws on the cards

Won't it help to drop the voltage from 230~250V to 220V?

And legislation - there's a legal minefield if I ever saw one...

...should be interesting.

Make everything more expensive for the consumer. :(

Is it just me or does that world seem out of place?

The CFL stuff is great. They just need to implement proper disposal....the chemicals in them are dangerous. I've replaced a 100w I use to study with a 25W. There is a handy guide on the side of the packaging that says 25W CFL = 100W normal bulbs and that appears to be true in practice. Plus it produces almost no heat while the old bulb made the metal part of the light hot enough to burn someone. imo they should ban the old ones like in Australia.

Eskom's idea of subsidizing CFLs heavily has also worked out well imo.
 
How can they even say the word "conserve" when they are giving it away for next to nothing?

We pay, they provide. there is no law that states how many apples I may buy from Pick & Pay - why should this be any different? especially if they were freely giving them away to the Woolies next door.
 
Our new office has gone green and it will make a huge difference. We now only have 1 active aircon that runs on batteries not mains - we also have some twirly-wirlies on the roof and a special cooling system that works with underground pipes and the twirly-wirleis. Works great as my sinus has cleared up.

We have also replaced all the geysers (2) with gas. We have two new sky lights that work awesome and supply enough light during the day. Also had high end CFL lights installed - price/quality makes a big difference.

We also have an array of "solar" batteries for backup. So next load shed we can continue working for 2 hours without having to start the generator.

But the end result is we have a more comfortable office. My sinus has improved majorly and we are all happy :-)
 
With an unfolding worldwide recession, and plummeting energy costs, this energy-saving initiative appears to be have been overtaken by events. Pretty soon they are going to be begging us to consume more. Do we really need new laws, when supply and demand can and should be regulated by price?
 
it's inconvenience for most people to save a bit of power, i replace every bulb in the house long ago with those energy savers and switched off anything thats not being used.

Now here is my question: How much did all this cost?

If you take that cost and work out the monthly eskom bill savings, how long before that upgrade pays for itself? 1 year? 2 years? 10 years?

Going Green is awesome, and I wish I could. But it is pointless to pay R10,000 for a solar water heater when it will only save me a few Rands a month. :rolleyes:

CFLs use up to 80% less energy than incandescent light bulbs and they last six to ten times longer.

In 2004, Eskom replaced five million traditional light bulbs with energy saving light bulbs.

That is the small picture, the bigger picture is how much energy is needed to make those fancy CFLs ? I am sure a lot more than the traditional light bulbs. So Eskom is just shifting the blame. Don't get me wrong, I think CFLs are great, but maybe they should have only replaced blown old bulbs, that would have been truly environmentaly friendly.

Gas is a fossil fuel - that is a big no-no. Wood is a renewable energy source and the emmisions from burning wood is a lot cleaner than gas. Gas is dangerous. Again, think of all the energy that is used to make those high end CFLs.
 
Wood is not healthy either for the environment, since you need to chop down a forest that sucks up the CO2, its like saying I'm eating lettuce with my pizza because it makes the pizza healthier, the pizza isn't healthy to begin with. Nothing will be better when producing the product, so go nuclear? How do we win this impossible situation?

Nope :( Power = Current * Voltage. So a 60 watt light-bulb running at 240v draws 0.25Amps. If the voltage was dropped to 220v this current draw would increase to 0.273Amps, still giving the same total power usage of 60 watts.

At the end of the day I reckon we can all play a small part just by switching off unnecessary lights, appliances, choosing glass over aluminum (those smelters chew power, plus beer out of glass tastes better anyway) etc. During a quick walk around my uni residence - which only houses 50 students - I just turned off 20 lights which were left blazing during the middle of the day. Throughout the winter months, bar-heaters are left on around the res without much regard. Totally unnecessary yet most people don’t even think twice. Cheers, sii.

Why are the few subsidising the many?
What about actually starting to bill all those people who currently aren't paying for electricity, by syphoning it off from Traffic lights and illegal connections?

Then we, as paying customers, might actually get what we're paying for, and Eskom would most likely have millions more to upgrade as they need to.

i am sure in the long run it's worth it. have one on the farm it works very well.
i am sure you can work it out how much watt a geyser uses and then how much a watt costs
