Alright so we now only 11 days away and my fingers are beginning to itch already.

What I want to know is what is the best way to go about upgrading?

Am currently running 8.04 but really dont want to wait for ShipIt to send me a free CD cos 6 weeks is a lifetime. I am assuming the best route is to use some local only bandwith and download the sucker but then the question is should i download an .iso or just hit the update button in Synaptic?

What are the considerations to be made here?
 
You have three options:
1. Download the iso and do a fresh install
2. Download the iso and add to your repository, then select dist upgrade (it should mostly run off the iso and not www)
3. Do a dist-upgrade without downloading an iso. 2. and 3. have same effect.

Indeed, but what are the pros and cons of each? which is the best?
 
Well if you download the .iso you can always use it to do a fresh install later, and you can install it other PC's (good if you want to update multiple PC's rather than downloading 700mb X times).

So for me its either 1 or 2.

Like above reply, there is no advantage of simply doing a reinstall. It is "cleaner", but you have to reinstall all your custom applications, etc.
The upgrade via iso (iso-->repository then dist-upgrade) is the best option in my opinion if you want to either reinstall at a later stadium or if you use more than one pc with Ubuntu.
