Hi People,

An interesting article, it seems that ICASA is more than willing to create competition for Sentech, bit a little bit scared to promote any for Telkom. I think Telkom gives ICASA more money than Sentech!!

Just two noteworthy bits from the article

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">WBS is likely to want access to this bandwidth, especially since it says it will work with Telkom "only as a last resort".
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
That's good to hear, but seeings that Sentech can provide int. bandwidth, why don't the other ISP's in S.A use them for their international link? What kind of infrustructure does Sentech have for this??

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">"We don't have the same rights as Sentech," he says. " <u>It can provide fixed lines</u>, too, which we can't."
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
Aren't Sentech then a viable competition for Telkom??

I don't know sentech's licence obligations or what they can and can't do, but taking from what was said in this article, it seems that Sentech aren't taking the proverbial bull by the horns, as too say. They could take Telkom on, but they probably wont, 'coz Telkom's their big brother.

I don't entirely understand what was meant by Sentech being able to supply its own international bandwidth, as Sentech is using IS (and perhaps UUNet) for all of its MyWireless bandwidth (last time I heard anyway) due to the fact that Telkom has refused to sell bandwidth to Sentech at a reduced price (even though according to the license this is supposed to happen).

Perhaps what they mean is that Sentech is able to supply international bandwidth via Satellite, with their own personal landing rights, I believe Telkom still has a monopoly on international cabling such as SAT-3.

Sentech uses IS for outgoing, and satellite for incoming afaik

So then Sentech would basically be re-selling IS's stuff

Thats the bottom line, yea.

Sentech does not have license to provide fixed lines though. I don't know where they got that from.
