PC Monitor as TV screen ?

Forgive me if this has been asked before -

My Sony TV has died and parts no longer available to repair it.

Would it be possible to use a PC monitor ( flat screen ) to view dvds?

I have a sound system so have no need for a TV with speakers.

If it is possible, is there a way to use the PC monitor to watch TV, bearing in mind one would have to tune the channels?

Just wondering ......
 
If you get a TV Tuner card... TV Card... Yes?

DVD's = yes... Just pop them into the DVD-Rom and play them...
 
You need set top box check this item -Compro v300 /v600 {google it}that will solve your problem in order to watch tv on a Pc monitor
 
Let me partly hijack this thread if I may, and probably provide answers for the OP at the same time, but what is the most cost effective (but best - yes I ask for a lot!) TV tuner card out there.

No need for plenty bells and whistles, just the ability to tune in and watch TV on the PCs LCD screen in the bedroom. Bear in mind this is a distance from the main TV in the lounge so will need to consider how to get the antenna there (or do they work fine with "bunny ears")
 
For just watching dvd or vcr, what video interface would I use between the Amp and the PC monitor ?

I presume I would need to ensure the monitor has an s-video input ?
 
You still have a VCR :P

To play the DVD put it in your PC's DVD-Rom and use the Audio out to send the audio from your PC to the Sound System ?

You will probably need a RCA / s-video to VGA converter box if the monitor has no normal RCA or s-video input. The ones I've seen cost around R500-R600.

I noticed you also in Cape Town , go to Esquire in Milnerton and ask Emile or Arnie for an External Kworld VS-SA110 TV Box it is simple to use , just plug in your vga cable to this box ,scan and save your channels like u would on a std TV set with the remote provided , I sold a few on these units and they simple to setup , expect to pay around R 350-R400 excl vat

Damn it! Why do people still insist on quoting excluding VAT! If I see a price I want to know what I am going to pay, not pull out a calculator and work it out!!

Some vcr's have a tuner built in. I remember mine did.

So if yours does, then you can connect your arial to the vcr and then hook up your vcr to the PC LCD. You change channels using the vcr remote.

Only thing, back in the day, it was a mission to tune my vcr.

fixed that for you, i believe the OP is trying to find out where to get the fairy dust from.
 
Another thought - based on the comment re the vcr tuning function.

If my vcr can be tuned, is there such a thing as just a tv monitor ? No speakers, tuning options etc.

If there is, are they actually cheaper than a normal tv ?
