My girlfriend mentioned having seen road side ads reminding people to check their registration details this weekend in preparation for the 2009 national election. I'm shocked at how little mention has been made of this in the media. The information is on the IEC website (http://www.elections.org.za), but it's on the last paragraph of the Elections 2009 news link.
The IEC will open all its 19 713 voting station on 8 – 9 November and we appeal to all South African citizens to go and register or to check their registration details.

I would expect something this important to be announced on every radio station, website and newspaper.

So if, like me, you didn't get the memo :) Make sure to check the voters roll this weekend or check your registration status on the IEC website. The US just made history, maybe next year will be our turn.

Maybe I've just been living under a rock, but I'm glad the rest of you guys are up to date. Hope you all register and are planning to vote next year.
 
May god help you if you do not register and do not in turn go and vote. You do not have the right to complain if you do not vote !!!

Our maturing into a true democracy where one party is not automatically guaranteed a 2/3 majority in any given election. Where people voice their dissatisfaction not through civil unrest, but through their votes.

I'm not expecting the ruling party to lose the next election, but I hope that the winning margin will be the closest it's ever been (i.e history is made). I just want the guys who win next year to know that if they don't take their jobs seriously, they'll be out by 2014.

That's an excellent post. It's really nice to see good posts made in Current Affairs amongst all the nonsense.

100% agree with you. Any ruling party needs to take the job seriously and be accountable to South Africans. Personally, I will never support (membership) any political party but I will always vote.
