ADSL comes of age

Ja, only problem is... this should have happened five years ago in South Africa. :(

Bu I am optimistic about the number of new technologies out there.. .and I think South Africa is getting to have a nice mix of broadband technologies in comparison to other countries.
 
Lately my adsl seems to have dropped in speed a little, I always used to get around 410kB/s when downloading, but it's down to about 350kB/s the last couple of weeks...
 
There are still people using dialup? What?
 
More like "The Connection of availibility"

Im sure everyone would LOVE to have the CHOICE of adsl, but unfortunately Telkom doesnt allow that:
* Location
* Price

But we can only hope for a faster tomorow...
 
I am more interested in how many people use dialup vs broadband. We continually hear how many broadband users there are, but that is kind of pointless if we don't know out of how many..

Unfortunately we are far behind in the advancements... mostly thanks to the DoC and Telkom...
 
this is bad, if mxit can be blamed for bad parenting then next thing thats going to happen is someone is going to ask for DSL to be banned due to marriages being ruined by WOW
 
Among the many issues I think with DSL in SA is that it's always been touted as a "always on" solution.
If you have a 1Gb cap and you leave your line "always on" you will be capped _very_ quickly. Similarly with most of the default offerings.
Once the issue of the cap is removed, or adjusted to a reasonable size, then DSL can be classified as both "broadband" and "always on", until then, it's just faster dial-up.
 
ADSL+3G: Replacing leased line-based VPNs

Many of our leased-line based customers on our Frame-Relay/MPLS VPN services are moving to ADSL. On an unshaped 4Mb/s service, we have found it to be about comparable to 384kb/s leased line. What we also found as a driving factor is if the ADSL is bundled with a 3G backup. So we build the primary VPN links on ADSL with backup on a 3G APN. A customer then gets a huge reduction in their leased line charges + have a backup solution on 3G. This works well where the cable breaks often, has errors or is simply stolen.

unfortunately they are :( Telkom's aging copper grid is a real headache. Upgrading the exchanges is a slow and arduous process with lots of interface difficulties.

and backhaul on a national level is also currently a bottleneck.

But progress is being made on both fronts.

Ouch! Dial-up for any purpose these days is an extremely painful exercise. Let them use a tethered cell phone rather.
