I'm keen on the Sony on special at Makro for R12,999

The only thing I'd have liked is if it did not have the speaker at the bottom edge - who uses the built-in speakers?

They have a Samsung at the same price and it's styling is what makes this one a winner for my wife.

IS there any purpose in buying HD now - surely we're not going to see this in our life time.

What would be your choice and is Makro the best place to buy it?

Macro is good choice.

I have the same series bravia, but the 32". The speakers are WAY better than I thought they would be, much better than the speakers on normal CRTTV's. When I play guitar hero I push them quite a bit and I find them impressive for built in. I recommend you going into Macro and taking a look for your self, that 40" looks stunning.

HD is definately worth it, especially if you have a console. DVD's look fantastic upscaled on a 360/ps3, blue ray even better. When I watch dvds on a normal CRT now its like watching a VHS.

I don't have DSTVHD yet but I have seen quite a bit of it at a friend and it looks great.

We bought one this morning, just finished mounting it on the wall... quality is superb! Hooked my PS3 to it and watched a BluRay, amazing... quality is really worth it.
The guy that sold us the TV said they hooked up a PS3 to the Sony and also a Samsung, and the Sony looked 1,000,000 times better.

I would go for the sony,i find that samsung's look good but picture quality is better on the sony's.The only samsung's that i think are good are the new rose's but the lardest one i have seen is the 26 inch i think the biggest is a 32 inch.

It all depends on the price. What you pay is what you get. Sadly though, in SA the prices are almost double what they should be, but anyway.

You know NHK wants to start doing Ultra High Def broadcasts by 2015. That's over 15x full HD resolution (33Mpix).

But the idea anyway is: the longer you hold off, the cheaper and better the set. Unlike good wine, gold or antiques, real-estate and even cars, electronics only gets cheaper with time, and cheaper models later on offer better features.

Sony or Samsung. Everyone will have an opinion but in that price range, Samsung does it for me. I just like the Samsung processing engine, the picture just looks so much more alive. Sony was the king of the tubes with triniton, but LCD and Plasma have opened up different playing fields and Sony's not king by default anymore.
