Does anyone have any news on this? What type of speeds are going to be on offer?

Reading the ITWeb newsletter, it states that Vodacom and MTN will roll out broadband later in the year using 3G technology. Do you think this will compete with ADSL and take out Sentech?

Doubtful, if it's based on any of the cell phone companies current pricing models you'll probably be charged per megabyte. In otherwards it'll probably be really expensive and not viable as an always on connection.

Speeds that have been mentioned are: 256kbps for standard users and 384kbps for business users. Online gaming was mentioned too, but I am not sure if that was for chess or counterstrike. [:p]

I have tried Half Life over my cell phone a few weeks ago. Connected speed was about 600 Kbps, ping time about 140 to 170ms. This was over a CDMA 1x network though, can't talk about a GSM network.

That's quite a good ping for a cellphone

Well am a good source for obvious reasons ur speed on the network pertaining to 255kps and 384kps is guarenteed speed.Y cause each phone connectd has a channel which it occupies(cant goin into detail it a long argeous disc..)also the phones tht are 3G compatible are expensive K*K expensive but i just heard news moto is bringing out 6 3G phones and the price.Wait for it only R2500 which is dam worth it.One more thing ur speed will depend on the phone. Some phones use the edge facility which is like GPRS but faster.i currently or sometimes use phone as modem and it cool

And u would be able to use ur phne as a modem and get speeds far greater than the wireless guys by the way they use the same principal.

What will the prices be in Rands? Surely they would have it cheaper then ADSL... and Sentech!!! And how would local and international pings be for gaming? I suppose you would use some of Telkom's infrastructure or go via satellite which is *** for gaming. What are the contention ratios? I see its a gauranteed download speed which would probably mean a 1 to 1 contention ratio... all this sounds good... for now! I just wonder if this service will be better then Sentech... if it is... BYE BYE Sentech!!!

It will be, the main thing for me is using my 3G phne as a modem.3G is in South AFrica already it was testd not to long ago where i am situated in my building the 3G test BTS[aerial] is in paardien island and a call was successfully made.I think the only probs u gna hav is battery life cause the farther u away from the signal the more the phne seeks for signal inturn eats batery life. But tht all good am defi.. getting me a 3G phne well its also costing vodacom 200mili to upgrade the BTS to accomdate 3G and only in major metro areas[:D]

As far as the contention ratio tht S*** dnt matter here[;)]...3G will bypass all tht is sentech...

doesnt Sentech use 3G technology for its wireless setup?

Hmmm, I wonder if the southern suburbs of JHB will qualify to have the towers 3G enabled... probably not :(

SFW, as far as I'm concerned everything you've stated in this thread is purely speculation. Where do you get the info from?

Please don't get me wrong, this is not intended as a personal attack, but until you can backup your statements with fact, I'm very reluctant to believe it.

(Try running your posts through a spell checker. It's really difficult to follow what you're saying)

They are but they dont hav the money, vodacoms infrastructure is there already techies are working on it as we speak.

EXAMPLE
The network will be an expansion of Verizon's BroadbandAccess service, a 3G wide-area network with speeds ranging from 300-500kbps. The network has already been successfully deployed in Washington, D.C. and San Diego, California since October 2003

do you have any idea what prices would be? How ould this service be for online gaming? What date will the normal consumer be able to subscribe to this service? Will it only be through Vodacom or will MTN also have this service?

So i could use this service at home to connect to the internet? Would I need to use a 3G enabled cellphone as the modem?

It is sounding good... especially having Vodafone help them out!

SFW, I'm sorry, but for me seeing a demo really doesn't cut it. I know all about demos (being in the IT industry), they are very rarely a true reflection of reality. ADSL was supposed to be great, Sentech was supposed to be great. Both are expensive and not particularly great. Did you know some of the first "leaked" prices for ADSL put it at R400 p/m?

Once again, I have nothing against you SFW and I'm not attacking you. But when it comes to these "amazing" new products, I've become a pessimist. I want to see a document/website from the company guaranteeing this before I get all excited.

That is not 3G. That is probably EDGE, which is at best 2.5G.

You're missing one important bit of information. Verizon is built on CDMA, the network foreigns loved to ridicule because in earlier years the United States didn't have one network. Well now it does, and the move from CDMA 1x to CDMA EV-DO (the 3G CDMA service) is significantly cheaper than moving from GSM to W-CDMA. For one, both are CDMA whereas the GSM to W-CDMA move is a move from TDMA to CDMA. New frequencies needed, total new equipment, and this ain't cheap.

THAT is why CDMA EV-DO is cheaper and being rolled out faster than any W-CDMA offer out there from the GSM companies in North America (AT&T, Cingular, T-mobile, Rogers, Fido, etc.)

been off for three days

as i mentioned b4 the info is not been sucked outta my thumb vodacom is in preperation. We upgrading our base stations it`s gna cost R200 miiiiiiiiiilllllllllllion rand to do this.Vodafone has part or owns part[shares] of Vodacom and they are working together to beta wot Vodafone failed to do..

so as b4 the wait begins rumors are spread and assumptions are made.

and using ur phne as a modem is possible am doing it and u will need a 3G phne and a new sim
