Active noise cancelling ear(head) phones for travel

I am looking for a value for money set of active noise cancelling earphones/headphones. I specifically want to plug them into the audio out of the airplane's entertainment system (I have the adaptor already).

I am concerned that if I go with headphones the audio out may not have sufficient power to drive the headphones. Earphones will work though.

Any suggestions or tips on what to look out for?
 
The headphones are powered by their own batteries, so no worries there. I can't make a recommendation because I'm also looking to get my first pair.

I think they're all good value for money, but I don't think any are cheap. Anyone had experience with the Sennheiser set (the big one) or the Bose? Is the external box that some sets use a real pain, or can you live with it? Suggestions?
