Just thought this would interest ADSL members :)

[Cape Town | ITWeb, 23 July 2004] - Internet Solutions (IS) is planning to introduce its own ADSL offering within two months, says CEO Angus McRobert.

McRobert spoke to ITWeb during the company's Internetix conference held in Cape Town yesterday.

He says the company is finalising negotiations with Telkom, and determining the pricing and exact specifications of the service.

“We definitely will launch our ADSL offering by end-September. A lot will depend on whether Telkom will be able to hold up their end of the bargain, but we are working on that,” McRobert says.

A number of other Internet service providers have already introduced ADSL offerings, but all have to use Telkom's “last mile” service, because it is the only telecommunications company to have a full service licence.

“Offering an ADSL service is an expensive exercise for an Internet service provider as we all have to depend on Telkom, and then the customers always want to use more bandwidth than they are entitled to,” McRobert says.

Government's delay in licensing the second national operator (SNO) came in for varying amounts of criticism throughout the conference.

Andre Wills, managing partner of telecommunications consultancy Africa Analysis, says the delay in awarding the licence means the business case for the SNO will have to be re-examined.

“Market conditions are continually evolving and so the business case that made sense two years ago when the licence should have been issued does not necessarily make sense now.”

Wills expects the SNO to aggressively target the corporate sector, as it will have to find the best way to make up for lost time and profits.

McRobert notes that the high cost of telecommunications in this country has arrested Internet growth. The current base of about 1.2 million dial-up users is not expected to grow significantly soon, he says.

“Mobile services may offer a solution. However, while the potential there is huge, those services are still in their infancy and offerings are not quite where they should be.”

I guess it all depends on what lengths IS will be going to in their ADSL offering. Are we looking at different capping options? Uncapped services?

Only time will tell.

Apparently IS own some infrasrture in SA,but not all, so they could be providing uncapped ADSL

“Offering an ADSL service is an expensive exercise for an Internet service provider as we all have to depend on Telkom, and then the customers always want to use more bandwidth than they are entitled to,” McRobert says.

Reading that comment already tells me this new service will be similiar to Telkoms offering, with the emphasis being on joining Telkom in milking the 'customer'.

When a upcoming service is already voicing concern with the 'customer' wanting more that they are entitled to, then you already know the service provider doesn't want customers actually using this service, they merely want the 'customer' to pay for it.

I ask you why would a regular home user want to pay a high price just to do regular e-mail and surfing? I can actually download a lot more than the 3 gigs Telkom limits a 'customer' to with a dial-up modem, just a lot slower.

The best way to describe the services on offer is RSA is a vehicle analogy:

Dial up modem/ISDN - A beat up old banger, slow as heck and unreliable but with some coaxing will get you where you want to be, eventually.

ADSL - A expensive hi-performance sports car with a decent maintenance plan, gets you where you want to go at a heck of a speed, rarely needs any maintenance and you get to laugh at the bangers on the road, but in RSA a device is installed to cut your engine after x km and you then get to putter along trying to ignore the jibes and taunts of the bangers that overtake your expensive car.

The purposed IS offering is the same car that Telkom offers but in a different metalic shade.

well... IS will be constrained as they have to use Telkom... and our telecoms are to be supposedly deregulated only in 2007!!! This is madness... I bet you the SNO wont even be up and running by then! And I suppose the deregulation wont happen until its 'too late'

if sno is up by 2007 deregulation will likely be after the world cup

Yes, i also think these guys will have telscum-like pricing, nothing to get excited about, unfortunately.

Telkom - South Africa's Handbrake to progress.
