With all these wear a ribbon campaigns, we the consumers might want to start our own campaign... by sending non performers ' ribbons of shame ' which can be cut out of any old clothing and then posted to whoever... be it Telkom, DoC or ICASA

Lets face we always have to hear how good some of these people or organisations are, and that they have won this award and that award, and voted best backslapper of the year for the last ten years - Well sod that, its high time to open the windows and shout out, we are as mad as hell... and while we still have to take it, now you can put these awards on your wall, or wear them in public

Would anyone like to either make up some virtual ribbons that can be emailed, or put up some names and addresses that we can send ribbons to via Post - would think Telkom, DoC and ICASA for starters

Any more ideas / reasons for the award?

Some milestones that are not great achievements and reasons for the award:

One of the Highest cost for communications in the World

The Second National Operator... was supposed to be in Action when Telkom's exclusive licence deal came to an end in May 2002... Nearly Seven years later they have still to launch commercial services nationwide

The so called e-Rate (50% discount) for schools and education facilities.. seven years and still to get off the ground

Charging for Local calls when it does not cost the service provider any extra

Stupid Usage Data Caps

Excessively high interconnection charges

Great idea :)

I would actually like this to receive some support and see if it could be taken more seriously.

When a company receives a ribbon it is reported somehow through blogs and news sites perhaps?

The deciding factor must be scrutinised as well to avoid companies saying that it was some group of immature kids sending this or something. Maybe there should be a panel of some of the more highly regarded members here?

I would love to donate a ribbon to Telkom & Icasa for ripping us off ...... I will cut it from a nice skid-marked, sweaty pair of undies.

Why not do it this way:

Design and publish a website.

Instead of ribbons let it be certificates, something that is also on the website and can be printed and framed by the nominees at will :)

To spite further just send them a laminated copy :D

Mmmmmm.. does anyone know where I can get two dead cats?

DISCLAIMER..... When Telkom and/or ICASA receive dead cats in the post... it was NOT me.. It was someone who read this post and thought it was a good idea... The posting of dead cats is like so totally 2005 and I no longer engage in the posting of dead cats both in a recreational or commercial capacity.

Would be nice if some organisations took up the torch and made an effort to make a song and dance of it, but also anyone should feel free to just join in

Think it might work best, if you could design a brand for informed consumerism. A kind of grafitti or image you can place on companies that are distructive to the growth in south africa(Ie monopolies).

If you had say like a M sticker, and you placed it subtlely on most large billboards telkom has, you might begin to subconsciously warn other consumers that there is something wrong with telkom(suckers being telkoms targeted audience).

Don't think that will work.

One approach would be to take on the activist stance.

When delivering the ribbon of shame have you could ensure that you're there to take photo's of the hand over.

Let us know if you're looking for hosting to sponsor the project when you're ready to kick start the project.
