After losing its publishing deal with Sierra following the merger of Activision and Vivendi Games, independent developer Double Fine has teamed with EA Partners to publish the action-adventurer Brütal Legend.

The future of the game, which has comedian Jack Black playing the main character, was in question after Activision dropped a number of games from the Sierra publishing label, which is a subsidiary of Vivendi Games.

The heavy metal-themed Brütal Legend will hit shelves in fall 2009 for PS3 and Xbox 360. "...I think it's clear that this game, like Metal itself, cannot be killed!" said Tim Schafer, president of Double Fine.

Double Fine is also responsible for the cult classic title Psychonauts.

David DeMartini, SVP of EA Partners said, "Brütal Legend is shaping up to be a creative tour de force."

What is it about?

Set for a Spring 2009 release, Brutal Legend stars Jack Black in the role of roadie Eddie Riggs, who sets on an epic quest to build an army of rockers with only a broad axe, a big block V8 and his faithful guitar in hand. Expect some big names of rock to get together on this project now that the title has the backing of EA.

There's also the debut trailer there, but a newer one will be out on Monday.

It's the new game by double fine studios, which is the home of Tim Schafer, he's a legend - Grim Fandango, Monkey Island, day of the tentacle

But don't think this is a "quest" game - like the excellent but unsuccessful psychonauts (I loved it!) it's an action adventure. This one's set in a world of "heavy metal cover art" it looks awesome. The second it goes up for preorder, I'm ordering!
