Didn't know they had it on prepaid already. How would you go about purchasing a new bundle once yours is depleted?

With the topup voucher as you do with the other cellular networks.

Its on my standard bank Internet banking as with the other cell operators. Im would expect that it will work in the same way, but don't quote me on it. I'm still not 100% sure how you would purchase the actual bundle itself.
Any Telkom prepaid 3G users out there that can enlighten us how it works?
I don't think they have prepaid yet. I bought the service recently and they were adamant that prepaid will only arrive later.

Do you have to sign a contract then? If so, can you cancel without any penalties as with an ADSL line?

Also please remember to tell us which branch/city you visited so that we can get into contact with them. Most telkom direct shops are clueless. They all said *march*
I think the only prepaid option at this point in time is the Mobi 3G stuff. They have a link on their website that "points" to 3G data bundle purchase (the link however does not work).

Is MTN not doing for you anymore:p

Dont see a prepaid option coming along for a while sadly. maybe by Q3 or Q4 we might have one but not until then. Definitely wont be one before June as they are probably trying to lock as many people into contracts as they can before seacom goes live.

You do not have to sign a 24 Month contract, you can get it on Month to Month.

Telkom Prepaid is definitely on its Way !
Dont be impatient guys.
They are definitely working on a prepaid version.
Expect it somewhere around October 2009.
They are working on the following now :
1. Getting the First phase of network roll-out complete.
2. Distribution of Sim cards to all Telkom Service Stores.
3. Getting the Lastest USB modems and affordable 3G phones into the Country.
4. Final stages of Roaming Agreement with Vodacom for Voice Calls when not in TELKOM Coverage area.
5. No roaming for DATA on Vodacom's 3G Network.
6. Interconnection issues for mobile calls.
They will be working on the following after April 2009 :
1. Getting the Second Phase of Network Roll-out Going.
2. Preparing their prepaid model and Sims with Vouchers.
3. Erection of new Towers.
4. Improving prices on the mobile broadband.
5. Ensuring all 2010 stadiums have Telkom 3G Coverage.
Hopefully their Turnaround Times improve and they get things going !

Which USSD application?
Almost sure it does support USSD just to check your balance though (*8888#): http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=2955043&postcount=3
You can use the MDMA application which ginggs wrote to send USSD codes:

Had a look at Telkoms post-paid data bundles and it's very favorable.
If those prices are going to be the same when prepaid is launched then I'll give my VC sim card, which I use for data only, the royal boot into the braai and start the purification by fire:D

wait a minute- I saw that a while back. Thats Mobi PREPAID seems to be like a prepaid cellphone for voice and sms: http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/w-cdma/telkom_mobi/mobi_prepaid.html any data bundle prices? Nope. If you go to "Do 3G on the move (http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/w-cdma/do_move/cost.html)" you only get Post paid data.

You can get prepaid on m2m basis, without any hassles of:
i) utility bills i.e. proof of residence, [well I did not present one, maybe you will?]
ii) 3 months of bank records.
iv) payslip less than 3 months old.
The prepaid model has some up and downs:
i) It requires a top up at least every 90 days else the SIM is deactivated. (~)
ii) Should you have had enough simply don't top up again. (+1)
iii) Any unused data _does_ carry over for maximum of 90 days after which it is forfeit. (+1)
iv) Prepaid is much more expensive (30c per Megabyte) than a m2m postpaid account; I am assuming you have post paid account with Telkom and you are not exceeding your cap every month. (-10).
Pricing is here: http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/w-cdma/do_move/cost.html
I am currently evaluating the service with a view to switch to it on a postpaid basis as it will become the best performance to cost ratio in the very near future for me.
The performance of the service is (very) good for my location, [measurements taken at 20H30 on 24/01/2010] see below:
