"Apparently, Yellowstone National Park has been having a very unusual number of earthquakes. Many of the most recent tremors have been deeper underground, an ominous sign. Combine that with a rapid rise in elevation over the past three years, and the possibility that earthquake activity from surrounding areas could trigger such an eruption on its own, and you've got the possible warning signs of a supervolcano eruption that would wipe out half to 2/3 of the continental US, plunge global temperatures, and wipe out a very significant chunk of world food sources. Very interesting. Off one of the links, I see they also mention the San Andreas fault in this regard:

The great Indian Ocean earthquake that struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on the day after Christmas in 2004 set off such tremors nearly 9,000 miles away in the San Andreas fault at Parkfield, Calif.

The links between activities at such great distances is a bit scary to someone ignorant of the science like me.
 
I saw a documentary on National Geographic called "Killer Lakes"

Very interesting documentary where they mentioned the lake found in Yellowstone park. Due to the fact that some lakes sit on top of dormant volcanos there's a build up of Carbon Dioxide which is kept contained by the large bodies of water. However, every now and again due to various factors this carbon dioxide escapes and causes huge problems. They reckon a sizeable earthquake in Yellowstone could cause this to happen which would unleash a massive tidal wave.

In 1986, a tremendous explosion of CO2 from a lake in Cameroon, killed more than 1700 people and livestock up to 25 km away. The dissolved CO2 seeped from springs beneath the lake which had been trapped in deep water by the high hydrostatic pressure. It happened due to an avalanche on a nearby mountain which displaced a large amount of water allowing the CO2 to escape.
 
Well.. if I wanted to destroy America.. that seems to me to be the best spot to hit it. Assuming a nuke would have any impact at all.

I was reading about the Lake Toba VI8 eruption. Much bigger than yellowstone and apparently reduces the then current human ancestors to a couple of thousand breeding pairs.

Yikes! Scary stuff. I'm going to start storing gas masks and baked beans ( to heat the atmosphere y'know! ). :)
 
It's actually rather strange how all these natural disasters seem to congregate in America. Volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes and tornados.

Mount Ranier is also proving to be highly unstable and overlooking a population of 2.5 million can you imagine the disaster if that ever happened. Very frightening.

season greetings.have you guys considered the hawaiian chain of islands created by volcanoes and still growing,3000+_ meters below sea level and if this took place on terra firma,could it rival the yellowstone super volcano.
